Laparoscopic adrenalectomy (LA) is the gold standard treatment for unilateral primary aldosteronism. However, satisfactory results have also been published with radiofrequency ablation (RFA). The aim of this study was to compare LA and RFA for the treatment of primary aldosteronism. A retrospective cohort study of the patients who underwent LA or RFA in a single center was performed. Morbidity and long-term effectiveness (cure rate and blood pressure control) were analyzed. A multivariate analysis with a propensity score was also performed. Thirty-four patients were included in the study, 24 in the LA group and 10 in the RFA group. Hypertension had been diagnosed a median of 12years before the intervention. Hypertension was properly controlled before the intervention in 55.9% of the patients. Hypertensive crisis was more common during RFA (4.2% vs. 70.0%, p < 0.001), although no patient suffered any complication because of these crises. LA was longer (174.6 vs. 105.5min, p = 0.001) and had a longer l in more patients from the LA group. Patients who underwent LA were taking less antihypertensive drugs than patients who had undergone RFA. We sought to determine the association between 'trouble sleeping', alcohol intake, hot flashes, and quality of life (QOL) in early-stage breast cancer survivors attending the Sydney Cancer Survivorship Clinic (SCSC). Survivors who had completed primary adjuvant treatment completed questionnaires assessing the following symptoms, QOL (mean global score on FACT-G), and alcohol intake (drinks per day for past week), on the first visit to SCSC. Trouble sleeping and hot flashes were scored from 0 (no trouble at all) to 10 (worst I can imagine), with scores ≥ 4 classified as at least moderate and ≥ 7 severe. 238 breast cancer survivors attended SCSC from September 2013 to May 2019, with data available for 227 (median age 53 years; 70% on endocrine therapy). Trouble sleeping was at least moderate in 54% and severe in 19%. 47% reported consuming alcohol (mean 4.9 drinks/week). Scores for trouble sleeping were no different between survivors reporting alcohol consumption and not (mean 4.13 vs. 3.6; p = 0.17). Survivors reporting at least moderate trouble sleeping (vs. less than moderate) were no more likely to drink alcohol (OR 1.74, 95% CI 0.96-3.14, p = 0.067) but had poorer mean QOL scores (69.1 vs. 78.3; p = 0.0006). Survivors reporting at least moderate hot flashes (vs. less than moderate) were more likely to report at least moderate trouble sleeping (OR 3.78, 95% CI 2.02-6.71, p < 0.0001) and had worse mean QOL scores (68 vs. 78; p = 0.001). In this study, we have found 13 samples among 703 males with multi-alleles at the DYS385ab locus, including one with five mutant alleles, nine with four, and three with three. The frequency of abnormal DYS385ab genotypes was 1.85% (13/703), which is very high in the Han Chinese population. The percentage of samples with diallelic patterns at DYS385ab was higher than that of monoallelic patterns (80.23% vs. 17.92%). Additionally, the percentage of samples with tetra-allelic patterns at DYS385ab was higher than that of tri-allelic patterns (1.28% vs. 0.43%), suggesting that there are possibly two copies with duplicated events happening frequently on the Y chromosome. Interestingly, the peak height of allele 13 was two to three-folds higher than that of other alleles. The allele 18 peak height was also two-fold higher than others, which could potentially be explained by a duplication event mechanism. We also found that tri-allelic genotypes for alleles 13, 17, and 20, tetra-allelic genotypes for alleles 13, 14, 19, and 20, and tetra-allelic genotypes for alleles 12, 13, 19 and 21 were more common than others. Furthermore, all 13 samples had multi-alleles containing allele 13, implying a founder effect in this particular Chinese-specific ethnic group. Taken together, this study provides new information for this population and will be useful for paternal lineage identification, kinship analysis, and family relationship reconstruction using Y-STR forensic DNA analysis methods. Fusobacterium nucleatum is an important oral pathogen involved in endodontic infections. This study aimed to assess the frequency of Fusobacterium nucleatum in primary and secondary endodontic infections and its associations with the clinical features in a Brazilian population by using both culture and nested PCR methods. A total of 100 microbial samples from patients with primary (n=50) and secondary endodontic infections (n=50) were analyzed by using culture and nested PCR methods. Strict anaerobic techniques were used for culture and identification of F. nucleatum. The DNA extracted from the samples was analyzed for the presence of target species by using species-specific primers. Culture and nested PCR methods detected F. nucleatum, respectively, in 11/100 and 82/100 root canals. F. nucleatum was isolated by culture from 10/50 (20%) root canals with primary infections and from 1/50 (2%) root canal with secondary/persistent infections. Nested PCR detected F. nucleatum in 42/50 (84%) root canals with thods, and its association with several clinical features reveals the importance of these species in the development of apical pathologies and reinforces the need of an endodontic treatment directed to bacterial elimination. Tyrosine aminotransferase (AaTAT) from the hornwort Anthoceros agrestis Paton (Anthocerotaceae) was amplified and expressed in E. coli. The active enzyme is able to accept a wide range of substrates with distinct preference for L-tyrosine, therefore, possibly catalysing the initial step in rosmarinic acid biosynthesis. The amplification of a nucleotide sequence putatively encoding AaTAT (Genbank MN922307) and expression in E. coli were successful. The enzyme proved to have a high acceptance of L-tyrosine (K 0.53mM) whilst slightly preferring 2-oxoglutarate over phenylpyruvate as co-substrate. Applying L-phenylalanine as a potential amino donor or using oxaloacetate or pyruvate as a replacement for 2-oxoglutarate as amino acceptor resulted in significantly lower catalytic efficiencies in each of these cases.
