Their interest lying in the fact that the European rabbit constituted a critical part of human subsistence during the late Pleistocene and early Holocene. However, rabbits are also a key prey in the food webs of Mediterranean ecosystems and the base of the diet for several specialist predators, including the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus). For this reason, the origin of rabbit accumulations in northwestern Mediterranean sites has proved a veritable conundrum. Here, we present the zooarchaeological and taphonomic study of more than 3000 faunal and 140 coprolite remains recovered in layer IIIa of Cova del Gegant (Catalonia, Spain). Our analysis indicates that this layer served primarily as a den for the Iberian lynx. The lynxes modified and accumulated rabbit remains and also died at the site creating an accumulation dominated by the two taxa. However, other agents and processes, including human, intervened in the final configuration of the assemblage. Our study contributes to characterizing the Iberian lynx fossil accumulation differentiating between the faunal assemblages accumulated by lynxes and hominins.Predators impact preyscapes (3-D distribution of forage species) by consuming prey according to their abilities or by altering prey behavior as they avoid being consumed. We elucidate prey (Antarctic silverfish[Pleuragramma antarctica] and crystal krill[Euphausia chrystallorophias]) responses to predation associated with the marginal ice zone (MIZ) of the McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, polynya. Prey abundance and habitat was sampled across a 30 × 15 km area by remotely-operated vehicle, and included locations that were accessible (ice edge) or inaccessible (solid fast ice) to air-breathing predators. Prey and habitat sampling coincided with bio-logging of Adélie penguins and observations of other air-breathing predators (penguins, seals, and whales), all of which were competing for the same prey. Adélie penguins dived deeper, and more frequently, near the ice edge. Lowered abundance of krill at the ice edge indicated they were depleted or were responding to increased predation and/or higher light levels along the ice edge. Penguin diet shifted increasingly to silverfish from krill during sampling, and was correlated with the arrival of krill-eating whales. Behaviorally-mediated, high trophic transfer characterizes the McMurdo Sound MIZ, and likely other MIZs, warranting more specific consideration in food web models and conservation efforts.Muscle inflammation is an important component of disease pathophysiology in several muscular dystrophies. Hyperintensities on MRI sequences with short TI inversion recovery (STIR) reflect edema, or inflammation (STIR+). Conventionally, STIR evaluation has been done by visual inspection. In this study, we developed a quantitative STIR method, and tested its ability to identify STIR+ lesions in healthy controls and patients with Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy and compared the results with visual STIR evaluation and quantitative T2 relaxation time mapping. The method was based on pixel-by-pixel histograms of the distribution of signal intensities from muscles. Signal intensities from healthy control muscles were averaged and used to define an upper reference limit. Muscles with >2.5% pixels above the limit were defined as being STIR+. The new method showed agreement with T2 relaxation time mapping in 95% of muscles. The visual STIR method only showed agreement with the quantitative STIR method and T2 relaxation time mapping in 88 and 84%, respectively. STIR sequences are available on most MR scanners and the post-processing used in the new quantitative method can be performed using free software. We therefore believe that the new method can play an important role in identifying STIR+ lesions in patients with neuromuscular diseases.Hedgehog (Hh) signaling plays a broad role in the development of many organs including bone and teeth. It is noted that sustained Hh activity in osteoblasts negatively regulates postnatal development in mice. However, it remains unknown whether Hh signaling contributes to cementum formation. In this study, to define the roles of Hh signaling in cementum formation, we analyzed two kinds of transgenic mouse models for Hh signaling activation designed by the inactivation of Suppressor of Fused (Sufu), a negative regulator of Hh signaling, (SufuOC) and a forced endogenous activation of Smo (SmoM2OC) under the control of osteocalcin (OC) promoter-driven Cre recombinase. Interestingly, cellular cementum apposition was remarkably reduced in both mutants. Consistently, matrix formation and mineralization ability were down-regulated in OCCM-30, a cementoblast cell line, following treatment with a pharmaceutical Smo agonist. In addition, reductions in Osx expression and β-catenin activity, which are critical for cellular cementum formation, were also detected in vitro.
