Recently, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) identified two SNPs (rs12570134 and rs1415425) showing genome-wide significant association with the double eyelid phenotype in Japanese. Here we report a confirmatory study in 697 Chinese individuals of exclusively Han origin. Only rs1415425 was statistically significant (P-value = 0.011), and the allele effect was on the same direction with that reported in Japanese. This SNP combined with gender and age explained 10.0% of the total variation in eyelid folding. DNA-based prediction model for the eyelid trait was developed and evaluated using logistic regression. The model showed mild to moderate predictive capacity (AUC = 0.69, sensitivity = 63%, and specificity = 70%). We further selected six additional SNPs by massive parallel sequencing of 19 candidate genes in 24 samples, and one SNP rs2761882 was statistically significant (P-value = 0.027). All predictors including these two SNPs (rs1415425 and rs2761882), gender, and age explained 11.2% of the total variation. Antimicrobial properties were assessed using modified agar disk-diffusion (n = 3) and simulated agar cannulation insertion site (n = 20) models. Both assays used Staphylococcus epidermidis which was seeded at the edge of the TA or dressing. Microorganism inhibition was visually inspected and evidenced by the presence or absence of a TA bacterial inhibition zone at 24 and 72h. Both TAs provided effective barriers to bacterial migration under cannula dressings, to cannula insertion sites and down cannula tunnels. Additionally, both TAs demonstrated distinct zones of inhibition produced when left to polymerise onto agar plates seeded with S. epidermidis. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and shedding intensity of gastrointestinal parasites from sympatric herds of domestic goat and Iberian ibex in autumn 2018. A total of 93 pooled faecal samples were collected from GXTBR (39 from domestic goats and 54 from Iberian ibex) and the host species was identified using molecular techniques, whenever defecation was not visualised in the field. Parasitological analysis was achieved by joint Willis flotation/sedimentation, McMaster and Mini-FLOTAC techniques. Seventy-two samples (25 domestic goats and 47 Iberian ibex) were retained for analysis after discarding the least fresh and those with uncertain specific identification. Generalized linear mixed models compared prevalence and shedding intensity between caprine species. Domestic goats showed a non-significant tendency to be more parasitized than Iberian ibex, as assessed by overall prevalence (100.0%, CI95 86.7-100.0 vs. 74.5%, CI95 69.5-84.8), and shedding intensity. This study reveals a similar community of gastrointestinal parasites in an abundant livestock species and an isolated population of wild caprine, living in partial sympatry. It is the first study on the health status of this endangered Iberian ibex population, in close contact with livestock, highlighting the need for further sanitary surveillance.Bacterial lipopeptides have become a research focus of many studies owing to their industrial and pharmaceutical importance. Although such studies focused on researching purification procedures and qualitative analysis, much remains to be explored and developed to improve the current methods. To enable thorough studies of lipopeptides, this paper describes a new method for purification and characterization of in-gel anionic lipopeptides. Specifically, lipopeptides attributed to the anti-staphylococcal activity of Bacillus mojavensis HF were separated using SDS-PAGE (sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) and subsequently characterized using mass spectrometry. Lipopeptide band obtained by gel electrophoresis was first visualized using three different staining methods. Next, the lipopeptide isomers were efficiently recovered from the gel band and structural characterization of the extracted lipopeptides was carried out by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS).
