This exploratory quantitative study examined the association between religious coping and depressive symptoms among a sample of 216 Black Americans living with HIV (BALWH) in the Southeastern United States. Descriptive analyses and multiple linear regression were used to determine statistically significant associations between religious coping styles and depressive symptoms, and to investigate the potential of sexual orientation and gender to moderate the associations between religious coping styles and depressive symptoms. Negative religious coping, but not positive religious coping, significantly predicted depressive symptoms. Sexual orientation, but not gender, significantly moderated the association between positive religious coping and depressive symptoms so that the relationship was only significant for heterosexual BALWH. Implications of these findings for future research and clinical work with BALWH are discussed.Glycans have many important roles in human health and disease in processes such as infection, fertilization, cellular development, cellular adhesion, cancer metastasis and immune system response. The presentation of glycan structures on surfaces for screening of their interaction with protein binding partners, interactions with individual cells, and development of bioassays is an actively developing field. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of glycan terminated alkanethiols on gold have found application in many of these areas. Additionally, more complex structures such as glycan modified polymers on gold surfaces have provided new routes for multivalent glycan presentation. Glycans have also been conjugated to monolayers formed on other useful substrates such as glass or silicon wafers. SAMs have been formed both by direct immobilization of glycan terminated alkanethiols and by conjugation of glycans to pre-formed SAMs with reactive terminal groups. The structure of the SAMs has been characterized using a range of methods including surface spectroscopy, scanning probe microscopy, and electrochemical methods. The binding of proteins to these SAMs has been followed using methods including surface plasmon resonance and electrochemical techniques such as impedance spectroscopy. In this chapter, we will seek to review the recent literature concerning SAMs containing terminal glycans, with a focus on their biomolecular interactions. The applications of these glycan-modified SAMs to the screening and study of protein and cellular binding and to biosensor and assay development will be reviewed.During the ongoing pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) allergic patients need to continue their constant and proper treatment, including allergen-specific immunotherapy. These patients are expected to be at a higher risk for exacerbation of lung inflammation during viral infection. We investigated the putative interplay existing between allergen-specific immunotherapy and COVID-19 infection in a Hymenoptera venom-allergic population. We evaluated the frequency and severity of COVID-19 infection in a cohort of 211 subjects referring to our center for the regular administration of venom immunotherapy (VIT). Our result showed that the median age of our cohort is similar to the one that in our region has been associated with a high incidence of COVID-19 infection, increased hospitalization, and mortality rates. We reported only an isolated positivity of COVID-19 in the overall group; whereas none suffered from upper airway symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever, cough, dyspnoea, sore throat, anosmia, and/or ageusia). Even though the demographic characteristics pose a substantial risk for such a population, we suggest that a regular administration of VIT may help in the development of an immunological milieu able to down modulate the Th1/Th17 environment that has been linked to inflammatory manifestations of COVID-19. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first description of the incidence of COVID-19 infection in Hymenoptera venom allergic patients treated with VIT, suggesting indirectly that venom immune tolerance-inducing treatment may be capable of reducing the aberrant inflammatory response induced by the virus in this specific population.Double heterozygosity SC is a major sickle cell syndrome. Its course may be marked by severe or irreversible complications, such as bone infarction. We here report the case of a 17-year-old patient presenting with compound heterozygous SC sickle cell disease following severe knee pain (gonalgia) in order to highlight the risk of delayed diagnosis as well as the need for prevention policies guiding early screening, thus improving patients' management and prognosis.The purpose of this study was to perform correlation of 5 cases and literature review. The study involved both children and adults. The major cause of retropharyngeal abscess was fish bone foreign body. Dysphagia associated with pain, fever and torticollis were the most common symptoms. Retropharyngeal abscess mainly occurred in the oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal regions. Imaging tests, in particular CT scan, allowed for accurate information in 3 cases. Aerodigestive tract obstruction was found in most of our patients. Only 4 patients underwent incision and drainage. All patients received medical treatment. A 2-year-old died 5 days after surgery due to septic shock. This study highlights the rarity of this condition in our context as well as the importance of early diagnosis and treatment to prevent life-threatening complications.Left ventricular (LV) myxomas are rare. We present a case of a LV myxoma arising from the interventricular septum in a 70-year-old asymptomatique man. General examination of the patient did not reveal any abnormality. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a round pedunculated mass (size, 20mm x 13mm) at the interventricular septum with a broad pedicle. The mass was successfully removed and was pathologically confirmed to be a myxoma.Digit loss might be due to traumatic injuries, congenital malformations and various diseases. Due to limited resources in low income countries, some local professionals find it difficult to meet the patient´s needs. One of the methods of gaining total suspension is to don the residual finger with aesthetic silicone prosthesis. A 25-year-old female presented with multiple-digit amputations of both of her hands due to autoimmune disease. At first stage of the treatment, silicone prostheses of the loss fingers of both hands were planned.
