This research provides theoretical guidance for the synthesis of high-performance MXene organic composite systems.Exploring and accounting for the emergent properties of ecosystems as complex systems is a promising horizon in the search for general processes to explain common ecological patterns. For example the ubiquitous hollow-curve form of the species abundance distribution is frequently assumed to reflect ecological processes structuring communities, but can also emerge as a statistical phenomenon from the mathematical definition of an abundance distribution. Although the hollow curve may be a statistical artefact, ecological processes may induce subtle deviations between empirical species abundance distributions and their statistically most probable forms. These deviations may reflect biological processes operating on top of mathematical constraints and provide new avenues for advancing ecological theory. Examining ~22,000 communities, we found that empirical SADs are highly uneven and dominated by rare species compared to their statistical baselines. To evaluate the postoperative visual outcome and complications of 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) via a lateral approach without proptosis of the globe in dogs. We reviewed the medical records of dogs diagnosed with giant rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) at Yokohama Animal Eye Clinic from 2016 to 2019 and treated by 25-gauge PPV. Medical records included signalment, follow-up time, etiology and duration of RRD, angle between the outermost trocar ports, immediate postoperative anatomic success rate, pre- and postoperative visual status, and postoperative complications. Seventy-two dogs (78 eyes, 13 breeds) were included. The most common breed was the Toy Poodle (48.6%), and the mean follow-up time was 690.6days. The most common etiology of RRD was cataract surgery (46.2%). The mean angle between the outermost trocar ports was 71.4º. Immediate postoperative anatomic success was noted in all eyes. Vision was regained or maintained in 87.2% of eyes, and the mean time to return of vision was 28.5days. Maintenance of vision until the last known follow-up was noted in 73.5% of eyes. The most common postoperative complication was glaucoma (40.3%), and glaucoma was the most common etiology of postoperative vision loss (88.9%). The goal of therapy in Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is to achieve optimal glycaemic targets and reduce complications. Robust data representing glycaemic outcomes across the lifespan are lacking in Australasia. To examine contemporary glycaemic outcomes and rate of use of diabetes technologies in Australasian people with T1D. Cross-sectional analysis of de-identified data from 18 diabetes centres maintained in the Australasian Diabetes Data Network (ADDN) registry during 2019. Glycaemia was measured using glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c). The proportion of people with T1D achieving the international HbA1c target of <53 mmol/mol (7%) was calculated. Rates of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) use were determined. 7988 individuals with T1D with 30 575 visits were recorded in the registry. The median (IQR) age was 15.3 (10.0) years and diabetes duration was 5.7 (9.4) years with 49% on multiple daily injections (MDI) and 36% on CSII. The mean HbA1c for the whole cohort was 66 mmol/mol (8.2%). HbA1c increased with age; from 60 mmol/mol (7.6%) in children <10 years, increasing during adolescence and peaking at 73 mmol/mol (8.8%) in the 20-25 years age group. HbA1c target of <53 mmol/mol (7%) was met in 18% of children and 13% of adults. HbA1c was lower on CSII as compared to those on MDI (p < 0.0001). All rights reserved.Polyphenism-in which multiple distinct phenotypes are produced from a single genotype owing to differing environmental conditions-is commonplace, but its molecular bases are poorly understood. Here, we examine the transcriptomic bases of a polyphenism in Mexican spadefoot toads (Spea multiplicata). Depending on their environment, their tadpoles develop into either a default "omnivore" morph or a novel "carnivore" morph. We compared patterns of gene expression among sibships that exhibited high versus low production of carnivores when reared in conditions that induce the carnivore morph versus those that do not. We found that production of the novel carnivore morph actually involved changes in fewer genes than did the maintenance of the default omnivore morph in the inducing environment. However, only body samples showed this pattern; head samples showed the opposite pattern. We also found that changes to lipid metabolism (especially cholesterol biosynthesis) and peroxisome contents and function might be crucial for establishing and maintaining differences between the morphs. Thus, our findings suggest that carnivore phenotype might have originally evolved following the breakdown of robustness mechanisms that maintain the default omnivore phenotype, and that the carnivore morph is developmentally regulated by lipid metabolism and peroxisomal form, function, and/or signaling. This study also serves as a springboard for further exploration into the nature and causes of plasticity in an emerging model system.
