Waste foundry sand (WFS) from the brass and bronze casting and molding process include various potentially toxic elements (PTEs), such as copper, zinc, tin, and lead. Hence, the utilization of WFS in construction and geotechnical applications evokes environmental concerns due to the rain-induced leaching of PTEs into the groundwater system. The present study investigated the extractive decontamination of WFS using mineral acids, e.g., HCl, H2SO4, or HNO3. Favorable extraction efficiency was achieved with HCl as compared to the other mineral acids, which was further enhanced at high temperatures and increased acid concentrations. The thermodynamic analysis indicated that ≥ 4 mol L-1 of HCl and ≤ 100 °C temperature ensured maximum extraction of PTEs due to the endothermic interactions between the HCl and PTEs. The HCl-treated WFS needed to be rinsed with water to restrict the after treatment elution of PTEs. The hazardous environmental impact of acid-treated WFS was evaluated following the standard leaching test and comparison with legislative recommendations for PTEs, which showed the water-assisted leaching rate of all the PTEs are within the regulatory limits.Two kinds of fluorescent conjugated microporous polymers containing pyrazine moieties were prepared by the polymerization reaction of 2,5-di-triphenylamine-yl-pyrazine (DTPAPz) and N,N,N',N'-tetrapheny-2,5-(diazyl) pyrazine (TDPz) with 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine (TCT) through Friedel-Crafts reaction using the methanesulfonic acid as a catalysts. Both CMPs have high thermal stability and decomposition temperature reaches above 596 and 248 °C under nitrogen atmosphere, respectively. By right of porous morphology and electron-donating nitrogen, as well as electron-rich π-conjugated structures, the adsorption performance for iodine vapor on the CMPs is very excellent, which can reach 441% and 312%. In addition, fluorescence studies showed that the two CMPs exhibited high fluorescence sensitivity to electron-deficient iodine, o-nitrophenol (o-NP), and picric acid (PA) via fluorescence quenching.The production of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in Brazil exhibits the highest growth rate in the world and represents approximately 45% of the total fish production. The objective of the present study was to assess the risk for human health due the consumption of tilapia farmed in net cages in eight aquaculture parks in Brazil. The concentrations of pesticides (40 compounds), metals (Mn, Ni, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Sn), arsenic, and cyanotoxins (microcystins) were evaluated in 16 fish from each park. Among analyzed pesticides, pyraclostrobin (0.18-0.32 mg/kg) and fenthion (0.0026-0.0037 mg/kg) exhibited values above the limit of quantification in the tilapia from Aracoiaba, Castanhão, and Ilha Solteira. The highest concentrations of As (0.44 μg/g) in fish tissues were found in Juara, Mn (0.21 μg/g) in Castanhão, and Zi (11.5 μg/g) were found in Três Marias. Furnas and Linhares exhibited the lowest metal concentrations. The estimated daily intake of muscle by the average Brazilian with 70 kg body weight is below the reference dose for all studied metals in all parks. Total free microcystins showed an accumulation pattern (muscle less then gill less then liver). The highest concentration in muscle was found in Castanhão (1043 μg/kg) samples. The results showed that fish exhibited metal, As, and pesticide tolerable daily intake (TDI) below the limit and pose low risk for human consumption. Otherwise, TDI for microcystins in fish of all studied parks was above the maximum level recommended by the World Health Organization, indicating that there exists a toxicity risk of fish consumption.The knockdown and adulticidal activities of individual Cymbopogon citratus and Eucalyptus globulus essential oils (EOs) and their combinations were evaluated against three medical insect pests (Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, and Musca domestica) using a WHO susceptibility test. The knockdown and adulticidal activities against the three medical insect pests of combinations of C. citratus and E. globulus EOs were higher than those of individual EOs alone. The highest synergistic effect on effective knockdown and adulticidal activities against females of the three species was achieved by a combination of 2.5% C. citratus + 2.5% E. globulus EOs, with 36.6 to 100% knockdown rate increase and 33.5 to 98.9% mortality rate increase. This study demonstrates that all tested combinations of C. citratus and E. globulus EOs were effective adulticidal agents against females of Ae. aegypti, Ae. albopictus, and M. domestica and have a high potential for development into a botanical insecticide for controlling populations of Aedes mosquitoes and houseflies.Aiming to uncover a shared genetic basis of abdominal obesity and osteoporosis, we performed a bivariate GWAS meta-analysis of femoral neck BMD (FNK-BMD) and trunk fat mass adjusted by trunk lean mass (TFMadj) in 11,496 subjects from 6 samples, followed by in silico replication in the large-scale UK Biobank (UKB) cohort. A series of functional investigations were conducted on the identified variants. Bivariate GWAS meta-analysis identified two novel pleiotropic loci 12q15 (lead SNP rs73134637, p = 3.45 × 10-7) and 10p14 (lead SNP rs2892347, p = 2.63 × 10-7) that were suggestively associated and that were replicated in the analyses of related traits in the UKB sample (osteoporosis p = 0.06 and 0.02, BMI p = 0.03 and 4.61 × 10-3, N up to 499,520).
