Another unique metabolic trait of the Mortierellales was the inability in carotenoid synthesis as a result of the lack of phytoene synthase and phytoene desaturase genes. The findings provide a perspective in strain optimization for production of tailored-made products with industrial applications. Renal Ischemia/Reperfusion (rI/R)-induced acute lung injury (ALI) is a major problem in rI/R. The objective of the current study was to explore the defensive roles of propofol (Pro), an intravenous anesthetic, on rI/R-induced ALI through mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling. Rats were divided into Sham, Pro (10 mg/kg), rI/R, rI/R + Pro (5 mg/kg), and rI/R + Pro (10 mg/kg) groups. Rats were treated with Pro at 1 h after rI/R treatment. Serum and lung tissues at 24 h after rI/R were collected to evaluate morphological changes and the expression of myeloperoxidase (MPO), inflammatory cytokines, and crucial proteins in the MAPK pathway. Pro attenuated the production of mediators, resulting in reduced levels of autophagy and apoptosis by restricting the MAPK pathway in rI/R-induced ALI model. Pro represses rI/R-induced pulmonary autophagy and apoptosis by decreasing the production of inflammatory molecules, and the effects of Pro are involved in the inhibition of the MAPK pathway. Nutrient restriction and/or realimentation may affect several placental functions, such as expression of selected regulatory factors, blood flow and other processes in sheep and other species. To determine the effects of the plane of nutrition, nulliparous white face ewes (6-8 months) carrying singletons on day 50 of gestation were randomly assigned to two dietary treatments receiving 100% of National Research Council recommendations (control; C) or 60% of C (restricted; R). Two groups remained on C or R diets from day 50 until day 130. From day 90-130 another group of C fed ewes was switched to the R diet, and another group of R fed ewes was switched to the C diet. This resulted in 7 groups (n = 5-6 ewes/group) C (day 50, 90 and 130), R (day 90 and 130), CR (day 130) and RC (day 130). At these time points, placental tissues were collected for the evaluation of progesterone receptor (PGR) protein expression (whole tissue), and mRNA expression in maternal (caruncular, CAR) and fetal (cotyledon, COT) (separated and COT, and PAQR5 (membrane PGR gamma) was greatest (P less then 0.0001) on day 130 in COT, but similar throughout pregnancy in CAR. Plane of nutrition affected (P less then 0.05) mRNA expression for all genes in CAR and COT throughout pregnancy. These data indicate that expression of PGR in ovine placenta is dependent on stage of pregnancy and plane of nutrition in sheep. The mechanisms of how diet and stage of pregnancy influences placental PGR expression and function remains to be elucidated. The aim of this study was to assess seasonal variations during different periods of the breeding season (spring and summer) on stallion sperm DNA fragmentation and in vivo fertility associated with cooled-stored semen samples. Ejaculates were collected from eleven stallions and assessed for sperm motility (assessed by computer-assisted sperm analysis) and plasma membrane integrity (evaluated under fluorescence microscopy). Mares were inseminated with cooled-stored semen (up to 24 h) every other day until ovulation. Pregnancy rates per cycle were determined detecting the embryonic vesicle by ultrasonography fifteen days after ovulation. Values (mean ± SD) for progressive sperm motility were significantly higher (P 0.05). Sperm DNA fragmentation was significantly lower (P less then 0.01) in spring in comparison to summer after 0h (4.81 ± 1.87% vs. 8.77 ± 5.78%), 6h (9.00 ± 3.19% vs. 18.73 ± 8.22%) and 24h (14.6 ± 4.13% vs. 30.14 ± 9.85%) of cooled-storage. Pregnancy rates per cycle were also significantly higher (P less then 0.01) in spring (50%) in comparison to summer (37%). There was a moderate negative relationship between positive pregnancies and sperm with fragmented DNA (r = - 0.619; P less then 0.001). Semen samples associated with moderate fertility levels (Pregnancy rate less then 50%) showed a higher percentage of sperm with fragmented DNA compared to samples obtaining higher fertility levels. In conclusion, seasonal variations were found during the breeding season, obtaining lower sperm DNA fragmentation and higher pregnancy rates in spring. Additionally, samples with the highest proportion of sperm with fragmented DNA showed the lowest fertility levels throughout the breeding season. OBJECTIVES The global increase in rare opportunistic microbial infections is alarming. The current review was undertaken to study the diversified disease spectrum, pathogenicity, and resistance patterns of Morganella morganii. STUDY DESIGN This study is a review of the diversified disease spectrum of M. morganii. METHODS The articles used in this review were all extracted from PubMed and Google Scholar, using the terms 'M. morganii', 'prevalence', 'virulence factors', 'infections', 'resistance pattern', and 'genomics'. This review includes original articles, reviews, and case reports focusing on M. morganii, hospital-based prevalence studies, and studies on resistance in M. morganii published between 1906 and April 2019. Articles published in English, French, Spanish, and Chinese were reviewed. RESULTS M. morganii has had a significant impact as a clinical pathogen and the pace of its occurrence and the increase in its resistance rates puts this bacterium on the path to becoming the next 'superbug'. These developments not only impact M. morganii, but as a result of gene and plasmid transfer evolution, other clinical pathogens have been able to acquire their diverse intrinsic and acquired virulence genes. Its vast host range raises concerns around its capacity to generate new infections through novel symbiotic relationships. CONCLUSIONS M. morganii opportunism is being increasingly reported across the globe. This bacterium is accumulating intrinsic and acquired multidrug resistance genes, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality rates for M. morganii infections and complicating its treatment. M. morganii should be recognized as a clinically significant pathogen, and clinicians should place this microorganism in the list of causative possibilities during patient care. It is important for both the infection control activities in hospitals and in public health sector.
