Further, an increase in the number of responses used to index performance affected the timing of motor imagery but not overt actions. In Experiment 2, a low-load repetition task interfered with the timing of motor imagery, but less so than a high load calculation task; both tasks had much smaller effects on overt actions. In Experiment 3, a word generation task also interfered with motor imagery much more than with overt actions. The results of these experiments provide broad support for the motor-cognitive model over the functional equivalence model in showing that interfering with executive functions had a much greater impact on the timing of motor imagery than on overt actions. The possible roles of different executive processes in motor imagery are discussed.The present study examined the impact of white noise on word recall performance and brain activity in 40 healthy adolescents, split in two groups (normal and low) depending on their auditory working memory capacity (AWMC). Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, participants performed a backward recall task under four different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions 15, 10, 5, and 0-dB SNR. Behaviorally, normal AWMC individuals scored significantly higher than low AWMC individuals across noise levels. Whole-brain analyses showed brain activation not to be statistically different between groups across noise levels. In the normal group, a significant positive relationship was found between performance and number of activated voxels in the right superior frontal gyrus. In the low group, significant positive correlations were found between performance and number of activated voxels in left superior frontal gyrus, left inferior frontal gyrus, and left anterior cingulate cortex. These findings suggest that the strategic structure involved in the enhancement of AWM performance may differ in normal and low AWMC individuals.Soil, rock, potable water, animal food and human hair samples were collected from the Dashan village, a typical selenium (Se)-rich area of China. Se content and fraction distribution were determined to trace the source of soil Se and evaluate the potential health risk to humans. Total Se contents in soils ranged from 0.60 to 10.46 mg kg- 1. The fractions of soil Se followed the order residual Se (R-Se) > organic-bound Se (O-Se) > acid soluble Se (A-Se) > exchangeable Se (E-Se) > water soluble Se (W-Se). Total Se contents in rocks ranged from 0.07 to 24.8 mg kg- 1. The dietary Se intake of local residents was estimated to be 261.2 µg day- 1 and hair Se content varied from 0.34 to 1.35 mg kg- 1, suggesting that the potential health risk should be concerned. Weathering of carbonaceous rock was speculated to be the primary source of soil Se according to the contents of Se in rocks, the distribution of Se in soil profiles and the relationships between Se and other elements in soils and parent rocks.Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are widely used to improve plant nutrient uptake and assimilation and soil physicochemical properties. We investigated the effects of bacterial (Bacillus megaterium strain DU07) fertilizer applications in a eucalyptus (clone DH32-29) plantation in Guangxi, China in February 2011. We used two types of organic matter, i.e., fermented tapioca residue ("FTR") and filtered sludge from a sugar factory ("FS"). The current study describes, for the first time, the interactions between gram-negative Comamonas aquatica and filamentous fungus Fusarium solani in removing heavy metal toxicity as an eco-friendly system. When combined, C. aquatica and F. solani grew well in a co-culture setup without showing any antagonistic indications. Monoculture versus co-culture setups were used to determine the metal tolerance concentration (MTC). Based on the metal tolerance concentration (MTC) values, cells of C. aquatica were able to tolerate 4, 5, 6, and 7 mM of Cr, Zn, Cu, and Ni, respectively. Moreover, C. aquatica withstood up to 6 mM of Pb. Although surgical repair is largely successful in closing the defect, many women with successful fistula closure report persistent urinary incontinence. Our study is aimed at characterizing incontinence after successful fistula repair and its impact on quality of life. METHODS This cross-sectional study enrolled women with a history of successful obstetric fistula closure with (n = 51; cases) or without (n = 50; controls) persistent urinary incontinence. Data were collected in Mekelle, Ethiopia, between 2016 and 2018. All cases underwent clinical evaluation and completed questionnaires characterizing the type, severity, and impact of incontinence. RESULTS Cases were significantly more likely to have acquired their fistula at an earlier age and with their first vaginal delivery compared with controls. Almost all cases reported both stress (98%) and urgency (94%) incontinence, and half reported constant urinary leakage (49%) despite successful fistula closure.
