Secondary analysis of existing large, national data sets is a powerful method to address many of the complex, key research questions in developmental behavioral pediatrics (DBP). Major advantages include decreasing the time needed to complete a study and reducing expenses associated with research by eliminating the need to collect primary data. It can also increase the generalizability of research and, with some data sets, provide national estimates that may form the basis for developing policy. However, few resources are available to direct researchers who seek to develop expertise in this area. This study aims to guide investigators with limited experience in this area who wish to improve their skills in performing secondary analysis of existing large data sets. This study provides direction on the steps to perform secondary analysis of existing data sets. It describes where and how data sets can be identified to answer questions of interest to DBP. To clarify the hypothesis that CRF attenuates the incident risk of pneumonia due to inflammation, we conducted a prospective study examining the independent and joint associations of inflammation and CRF on the risk of pneumonia in a population sample of 2041 middle-aged men. Cardiorespiratory fitness was directly measured as peak oxygen uptake (V˙o2peak) during progressive exercise testing to volitional fatigue, and categorized into tertiles. Inflammation was defined by high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP). Pneumonia cases were identified by internal medicine physicians using the International Classification of Diseases codes in clinical practice. During a median follow-up of 27 yr, 432 pneumonia cases were recorded. High hsCRP and CRF were associated with a higher risk (HR = 1.38; 95% CI, 1.02-1.88) and a lower risk of pneumonia (HR = 0.55; CI, 0.39-0.76) after adjusting for potential confounders, respectively. Compared with normal hsCRP-Fit, moderate to high hsCRP-Unfit had an increased risk of pneumonia (HR = 1.63; CI, 1.21-2.20), but moderate to high hsCRP-Fit was not associated with an increased risk of pneumonia (HR = 1.25; CI, 0.93-1.68). High CRF attenuates the increased risk of pneumonia due to inflammation. Intracardiac thrombus (ICT) formation is a common complication of several cardiovascular diseases. Warfarin is recommended for treatment of ICT by guidelines based on observational studies occurring before the advent of nonvitamin K antagonist direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). We aim to evaluate the current prescribing patterns at our institution and to compare the efficacy and safety profiles of warfarin versus DOACs for ICT. This is a retrospective review of adult patients treated with oral anticoagulation for ICT between May 2013 and December 2019. Our primary end point was complete thrombus resolution. Secondary outcomes included time to resolution of thrombus, treatment failure, and duration of therapy. Safety end points included stroke and systemic embolization (SSE) and bleeding events. A total of 123 patients were included (DOAC n = 61; warfarin n = 62). Continuing professional development (CPD) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) can build capacity of health professionals in infant and young child feeding (IYCF). However, travel to in-person workshops can be time-consuming and expensive. Thus, we developed a free online course to provide training in IYCF to health professionals globally; the course received overwhelmingly high numbers of registrations. Our aim was to conduct a program evaluation to assess course satisfaction, learning, and application using surveys administered postcourse and 9 months later. Response rates were 99% (n = 835) and 55% (n = 312), respectively. Among those who only partially completed the course, reasons for noncompletion were assessed (response rate 29%, n = 72). Data within a 1-year period were analyzed. Respondents worked in multiple settings and organizations worldwide. Nearly all (99%) reported postcourse that they learned "a lot" or "some" from all topics, and over 70% applied "a lot" of or "some" information 9 months later.
