Furthermore, we studied the sural nerve of our patient by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling and electron microscopy. A number of apoptotic cells were observed in the endoneurium of the nerve by transferase dUTP nick end labeling. Chromatin condensation was confirmed in the nucleus of non-myelinating Schwann cells by electron microscopy. These findings suggest that E61K TTR is low amyloidogenic, in vitro and in vivo. However, TTR aggregates and amyloid fibrils in the DRG may cause sensory impairments in FAP because the DRG has no blood-nerve barrier. Moreover, Schwann cell apoptosis may contribute to the neurodegeneration. We sought to replicate and extend provisional research on the personological correlates of conspiracy beliefs by examining their associations with abnormal- and normal-range personality domain-level traits and, for the first time, lower-order personality facets; we also examined internalizing symptoms. The study comprised four samples of community and student participants (N =1,927), and examined the cross-sectional relations between self-reported conspiratorial ideation and measures of (a) the six-factor model of general personality, (b) intellectual humility (IH), (c) traits relevant to certain personality disorder features (narcissism, psychopathy, disinhibition), and (d) internalizing symptoms (depression, anxiety, anger). Agreeableness and conscientiousness were significant, albeit modest, negative correlates of conspiracy beliefs, although other general personality dimensions tended to manifest negligible associations. Significant associations between lower-order personality facets and conspiracy beliefs, not evident at the domain level, emerged. Indices of IH were significant negative correlates. Conspiracy beliefs were also associated with a range of personality disorder features and internalizing symptoms. Our results suggest that the nonclinical individual prone to conspiratorial ideation is somewhat likely to display a complex mixture of traits including distress, immodesty, impulsivity, and negative affect. Future research should investigate potential multiplicative relations among personological variables in predicting conspiracy beliefs. The present study examined the essentialist lay theories of happiness (i.e., beliefs that happiness is determined by one's genes and hence, immutable) and its implications for motivation to enhance one's happiness level. Study 1 (N=454) developed a scale called the "Essentialist Beliefs about Happiness (EBH)" and Study 2 (N=207) validated the scale by comprehensively examining conceptually overlapping constructs related to the EBH. In Study 3 (N=401) and Study 4 (N=452), by utilizing correlational and experimental methods, we tested the effect of the EBH on motivation to enhance happiness. Using the scale developed and validated in Study 1 and Study 2, Study 3 and Study 4 found that the essentialist beliefs about happiness predicted reduced motivation to be happier. Specifically, participants with greater essentialist beliefs about happiness were less likely to engage in happiness-boosting activities. Specifically, those who believed that happiness is influenced by one's attitude and effort had greater intention to engage in happiness-boosting activities. Most diagnostic laboratories report this simply as a qualitative positive/negative result. The objective of this study was to examine the clinical and serological relevance of a novel subset of anti-Ro60 in patients who display low levels of anti-Ro60 (anti-Ro60low ). We retrospectively identified anti-Ro60 sera during a 12-month period at a major immunopathology diagnostic laboratory in Australia. These all were anti-Ro60-precipitin-positive on the diagnostic gold standard counter-immuno-electrophoresis (CIEP). Lineblot immunoassay was used to stratify patients into either anti-Ro60low or anti-Ro60high subsets. For parasites that are transmitted environmentally, abiotic conditions might modulate the success of this journey. Here we evaluate how light, a key abiotic factor, influences spatiotemporal patterns of zooplankton disease where light varies seasonally, across lakes, and with depth in a lake. In an in situ experiment using those three sources of variation, we tested sensitivity of spores of two parasites to ambient light. Infectivity of both parasites was lower when exposed to ambient light in comparison to parasites exposed to otherwise similar conditions in the dark. The more sensitive parasite (the fungus, Metschnikowia) was damaged even under lower ambient light during late fall (November). With this differential sensitivity established, we evaluated links between light environment and natural outbreaks in lakes. Consistent with the incubations, epidemics of the less sensitive parasite (the bacterium, Pasteuria) started earlier in the fall (under higher ambient light), and both parasites had smaller outbreaks in more transparent lakes.
