The coordination of a carbonyl to a Lewis acid represents the first step in a wide range of catalytic transformations. In many reactions it is necessary for the Lewis acid to discriminate between starting material and product, and as a result, how these structures behave in solution must be characterized. Herein, we report the application of computational modeling to calculate properties of the solution interactions of acetone and benzaldehyde with FeCl3. Using these chemical models, we can predict spectral features in the carbonyl region of infrared (IR) spectroscopy. These simulated spectra are then directly compared to experimental spectra generated via titration-IR. We observe good agreement between theory and experiment, in that, between 0 and 1 equiv carbonyl with respect to FeCl3, a pairwise interaction dominates the spectra. When >1 equiv carbonyl is present, our theoretical model predicts two possible structures composed of 41 carbonyl to FeCl3, for acetone as well as benzaldehyde. When these predicted spectra are compared with titration-IR data, both structures contribute to the observed solution interactions. These findings suggest that the resting state of FeCl3-catalyzed carbonyl-based reactions employing simple substrates starts as a Lewis pair, but this structure is gradually consumed and becomes a highly ligated, catalytically less active Fe-centered complex as the reaction proceeds. An analytical model is proposed to quantify catalyst inhibition due to equilibrium between 11 and 41 carbonylFe complexes. Hip fractures predominantly occur in the geriatric population and results in increased physical inactivity and reduced independency, largely influenced by a downward spiral of ambulatory capacity, related to loss of skeletal muscle strength and postural stability. In conjunction with an aging population and increased prevalence of osteoporosis, proper management of periprosthetic, and interprosthetic fractures is of great interest to orthopedic surgeons. This study aims to report the clinical and radiographic outcomes, complications and reoperations of IFFs in geriatric patients. A retrospective single-institution case series study was conducted. Between 2011 and 2019, 83 patients underwent surgical treatment for periprosthetic femoral fractures. Thirteen fractures were identified as IFFs. Patient demographics and comorbidities were collected preoperatively, and fractures were classified with the Vancouver and AO unified classification system (AO-UCS). We included 12 patients (13 hips) with IFFs (AO-UCS type IV.3 B (2/13) type IV.3 C (3/13), type IV.3 D (8/13)). The average patient age was 86.54 (range, 79-89) years. There were 10 females and 2 males. Perioperative morbidity has been identified in 10 of the 12 patients, and the 3-month and 1-year mortality were reported in 2 and 3 patients, respectively. Cerclage cables were used in 9 of 12 patients. One of 12 patients showed a local complication, with no documented implant failure or revision. Few reports have focused on the use of modern DM-THA in the setting of Asian populations for displaced osteoporotic femoral neck fractures (FNFs). This study aimed to investigate the outcomes of Chinese population with displaced osteoporotic FNFs initially treated with modern DM-THA. Data from 112 consecutive patients (112 hips) with displaced osteoporotic FNFs initially treated with modern DM-THA during 2011-2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Follow-ups were performed at 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, and then every 1 year after surgery. The primary endpoint was the Harris Hip Score (HHS); the secondary endpoint was the main orthopedic complication rate. The mean HHS improved from 58.62 (±15.79) prior to surgery to 86.13 (±9.92) at the final follow-up. The main complication rate was 14.2% (16/112). Sixteen complications in 10 patients were recorded. Of the 16 complications, there were 2 (1.7%) cases requiring revision DM-THA, 3 (2.6%) cases of loosening, 2 (1.7%) cases of migration, 3 (2.6%) intra-prosthetic dislocation (IPD), 4 (3.5%) cases of tilting, and 2 (1.7%) cases of severe wear. The need for revision was attributed to prosthesis loosening associated with poor bony quality. In patients with displaced osteoporotic FNFs, DM-THA may yield favorable functional outcomes and a low rate of main orthopedic complications, in particular, a low dislocation rate.
