In reciprocity, a positive score is given to cooperative behaviour while a negative score is given to non-cooperative behaviour, and the dilemma is resolved by selectively cooperating only with those with positive scores. However, many studies have shown that non-cooperation with those who have not cooperated also downgrades one's reputation; they have called this situation the scoring dilemma. To address this dilemma, the notion of justified punishments has been considered. The notion of justified punishment allows good individuals who defect against bad co-players to keep their standing. Despite numerous studies on justified punishment, it is unknown whether this solution leads to a new type of dilemma because reputations may be downgraded when the intent of punishment is not correctly communicated. The dilemma of punishment has so far been rarely analysed, and thus, the complete solution of the mechanism for evolving cooperation using the principle of indirect reciprocity has not been found yet. Here, we identify sufficient conditions to overcome each of the three dilemmas including the dilemma of punishment to maintain stable cooperation by using the framework of evolutionary game theory. This condition includes the principle of detecting free riders, which resolves the social dilemma, the principle of justification, which resolves the scoring dilemma, and the principle of generosity, which resolves the dilemma of punishment. A norm that satisfies these principles can stably maintain social cooperation. Our insights may offer a general assessment principle that applies to a wide range of subjects, from individual actions to national decisions.The threat of predation by snakes is considered to have played a significant role in the evolution of primate sensory systems and behavior. However, we know relatively little about individual and group responses given the rarity of observed predation events. Here we report an observed (filmed) predation attempt by an adult Boa constrictor (~ 2 m) on a juvenile white-faced capuchin (Cebus imitator) in the Sector Santa Rosa of the Área de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The snake caught the juvenile monkey on the ground during a terrestrial play session. When the victim screamed, the alpha male, alpha female, and another adult female ran to the scene, physically attacked the snake (with bites and hits), and pulled the victim to safety. Most group members participated in the vocal mobbing of the snake both during and after the attack. Based on the outcomes of this predation attempt and published reports of other B. constrictor attacks on primates, the coordinated efforts of ≥ 2 group members is needed for a successful rescue. This observation adds to our growing knowledge of cooperative group behavior and its importance in predator defense.The role of fibroblasts in tissue fibrosis has been extensively studied. Activated fibroblasts, namely myofibroblasts, produce pathological extracellular matrix. CD248, a type I transmembrane glycoprotein, is expressed in fibroblasts after birth. In human chronic kidney disease, upregulated CD248 in myofibroblasts is linked to poor renal survival. In this study, we demonstrated a novel interaction between CD248 and macrophages to be a key step in mediating tissue fibrosis. CD248 was upregulated in myofibroblasts in murine models of renal and peritoneal fibrosis. Cd248 knockout (Cd248-/-) could attenuate both renal and peritoneal fibrosis. By parabiosis of GFP reporter mice and Cd248-/- mice, we showed that attenuation of renal fibrosis was associated with a decrease of macrophage infiltration in Cd248-/- mice. Moreover, decrease of chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 17 and Ccl22 was found in macrophages isolated from the fibrotic kidneys of Cd248-/- mice. Because galectin-3-deficient macrophages showed decreased Ccl17 and Ccl22 in fibrotic kidneys, we further demonstrated that CD248 interacted specifically with galectin-3 of macrophages who then expressed CCL17 to activate collagen production in myofibroblasts. Mice with DNA vaccination targeting CD248 showed decreased fibrosis. We developed a customized targeted cfDNA sequencing approach for breast cancer (BC) using unique molecular identifiers (UMIs) for error correction. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/sp2509.html Our assay, spanning a 284.5 kb target region, is combined with a novel freely-licensed bioinformatics pipeline that provides detection of low-frequency variants, and reliable identification of copy number variations (CNVs) directly from plasma DNA. We first evaluated our pipeline on reference samples. Then in a cohort of 35 BC patients our approach detected actionable driver and clonal variants at low variant frequency levels in cfDNA that were concordant (77%) with sequencing of primary and/or metastatic solid tumour sites. We also detected ERRB2 gene CNVs used for HER2 subtype classification with 80% precision compared to immunohistochemistry. Further, we evaluated fragmentation profiles of cfDNA in BC and observed distinct differences compared to data from healthy individuals. Our results show that the developed assay addresses the majority of tumour associated aberrations directly from plasma DNA, and thus may be used to elucidate genomic alterations in liquid biopsy studies.Tin monoxide (SnO) has attracted attention due to its p-type character and capability of ambipolar conductivity when properly doped, properties that are beneficial for the realization of complementary oxide thin film transistors technology, transparent flexible circuits and optoelectronic applications in general. However, its small fundamental band gap (0.7 eV) limits its applications as a solar energy material, therefore tuning its electronic properties is necessary for optimal performance. In this work, we use density functional theory (DFT) calculations to examine the electronic properties of the Sn1-xPbxO ternary oxide system. Alloying with Pb by element substitution increases the band gap of SnO without inducing defect states in the band gap retaining the anti-bonding character of the valence band maximum which is beneficial for p-type conductivity. We also examine the properties of the SnO/PbO heterojunction system in terms of band alignment and the effect of the most common intrinsic defects. A broken gap band alignment for the SnO/PbO heterojunction is calculated, which can be attractive for energy conversion in solar cells, photocatalysis and hydrogen generation.
