Myotonic dystrophy type-1 (Steinert disease) is an autosomal dominant, progressive multisystem disease in which myotonic crisis can be triggered by several factors including pain, emotional stress, hypothermia, shivering, and mechanical or electrical stimulation. In this report, dexmedetomidine-based general anesthesia, in combination with a thoracic epidural for laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a patient with Steinert disease, is presented. An Aintree intubation catheter with the guidance of a fiberoptic bronchoscope was used for intubation to avoid laryngoscopy. Prolonged anesthetic effects of propofol were reversed, and recovery from anesthesia was accelerated using an intravenous infusion of theophylline.Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been a major threat to global public health. The association between temperature and CVD has been widely studied and reported in cities in developed countries. However, information from developing countries, especially from suburbs and countryside, is quite limited. In this study, the daily time series data on CVD hospital admissions in farmers in the suburbs of Tianshui, China, and the meteorological data from 2012 to 2015, were collected; besides, a quasi-Poisson regression with a distributed-lag non-linear model (DLNM) was used to explore the impact of local daily mean temperature on CVD hospital admissions in suburban farmers. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/tasquinimod.html This study found that, first, from 2011 to 2015, a total of 30,611 person-times of CVD hospital admissions in farmers were recorded; second, there was a "J-shaped" relation between temperature and CVD hospital admissions, and both low and high temperature increased the risk of hospital admission, but the impact of high temperature was greater; third, compared with the minimum hospitalization temperature (MHT) at 0.3 °C, during 0 to 21 lag days, the cumulative relative risk (RR) for extreme cold and heat (1st and 99th percentile of temperature, respectively) was 1.117 (95% CI 0.941-1.325) and 1.740 (95% CI 1.302-2.327), respectively, and that of moderate cold and heat (5st and 95th percentile of temperature, respectively) was 1.029 (95% CI 0.958-1.106) and 1.572 (95% CI 1.210-2.042), respectively; fourth, compared with male and ≥ 65 years groups, the risk for low temperature was greater for female and less then 65 years groups, the risk for high temperature was just the opposite; last, about 21.04% of CVD hospital admissions burden were attributed to the ambient temperature, and most of (about 19.26%) were caused by moderate heat. In Tianshui, alongside with extreme temperature, the moderate temperature might be an important risk factor for CVD hospital admissions in suburban farmers.The variations in physicochemical properties of airborne particles collected during a typical transition from haze to dust were investigated using single particle analysis with transmission and scanning electron microscopes combined with online measurement of chemical compositions of airborne particles in Beijing in February 2013. The transition was divided into three phases based on the weather condition. During haze pollution (Phase 1), gaseous and particle pollutants enhanced gradually. Results from single particle analysis showed that more coatings and more anthropogenic elements (e.g., S) appeared on the surface of fine and coarse particles, which was probably caused by efficient aqueous-phase reactions under high humidity (70%) condition. Phase 2 was dust intrusion episode. PM10 reached over 1000 μg m-3. Larger fractions of mineral particles and bare-like soot particles were observed in fine particles, while the fraction of secondary particles with coatings decreased. The proportion of black carbon in submicron particles also increased. Photochemical oxidation in gas phase likely dominated in secondary formation under high O3 concentration. After the dust episode (Phase 3), secondary formation enhanced obviously. Soot aged quickly and had a larger mode of 0.45 μm than the other phases. The size modes of airborne fine particles during Phases 1 and 3 were 0.35 μm, which were a bit larger than that during Phase 2 (0.24 μm). These results indicate that dust plumes accompanied with strong wind brought mineral particles in both fine and coarse modes and freshly emitted particles with smaller sizes, and swept away pre-presence air pollutants. This study could provide detailed information on the physicochemical properties of airborne particles during typical severe pollution processes in a short time. Such short-term change should be taken into account in order to more accurately assess the environmental, climatic and health-related effects of airborne particles.Secondary succession on abandoned agricultural lands can produce climate change mitigation co-benefits, such as soil carbon sequestration. However, the accumulation of soil organic carbon (SOC) in Mediterranean regions has been difficult to predict and is subject to multiple environmental and land management factors. Gains, losses, and no significant changes have all been reported. Here we compile chronosequence data (n = 113) from published studies and new field sites to assess the response of SOC to agricultural land abandonment in peninsular Spain. We found an overall SOC accumulation rate of +2.3% yr-1 post-abandonment. SOC dynamics are highly variable and context-dependent. Minimal change occurs on abandoned cereal croplands compared to abandoned woody croplands (+4% yr-1). Accumulation is most prevalent within a Goldilocks climatic window of ~13-17 °C and ~450-900 mm precipitation, promoting >100% gains after three decades. Our secondary forest field sites accrued 40.8 Mg C ha-1 (+172%) following abandonment and displayed greater SOC and N depth heterogeneity than natural forests demonstrating the long-lasting impact of agriculture. Although changes in regional climate and crop types abandoned will impact future carbon sequestration, abandonment remains a low-cost, long-term natural climate solution best incorporated in tandem with other multipurpose sustainable land management strategies.To assess the potential effects of microplastics (MPs) on gut microbiome, a simple investigation of gut microbial structure is not sufficient, and the function and association of gut microbial structure with host health should also be taken into account. Here, the effects of two particle sizes (2 and 200 μm) of polystyrene MPs (PS-MPs) on the gut microbiota of medaka were evaluated following oral administration at 0.3 and 3.0 μg/mg for 28 days. No change in body length and gut histopathology damage were observed. However, the exposure to PS-MPs significantly decreased fish body weight and disrupted the liver anti-oxidative status. The PS-MPs caused a shift in the gut microbial structure of medaka accompanied by changes in community function, including significant environmental stress, increased carbon degradation/fixation activities, and partially modified nitrogen/phosphorus/sulfur metabolic abilities. Furthermore, the PS-MPs exposure disturbed the glycolipid/tyrosine/energy metabolism and the endocrine balance.
