Our findings provide quantitative evidence for diminished flexibility in older adults' semantic networks, despite the stability of semantic knowledge across the lifespan. This may be one contributing factor to age-related differences in language production.The present work (N = 1906 U.S. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/th1760.html residents) investigates the extent to which peoples' evaluations of actions can be biased by the strategic use of euphemistic (agreeable) and dysphemistic (disagreeable) terms. We find that participants' evaluations of actions are made more favorable by replacing a disagreeable term (e.g., torture) with a semantically related agreeable term (e.g., enhanced interrogation) in an act's description. Notably, the influence of agreeable and disagreeable terms was reduced (but not eliminated) when making actions less ambiguous by providing participants with a detailed description of each action. Despite their influence, participants judged both agreeable and disagreeable action descriptions as largely truthful and distinct from lies, and judged agents using such descriptions as more trustworthy and moral than liars. Overall, the results of the current study suggest that a strategic speaker can, through the careful use of language, sway the opinions of others in a preferred direction while avoiding many of the reputational costs associated with less subtle forms of linguistic manipulation (e.g., lying). Like the much-studied phenomenon of "fake news," manipulative language can serve as a tool for misleading the public, doing so not with falsehoods but rather the strategic use of language.The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 and subsequent COVID-19 pandemic highlights the morbidity and potential disease severity caused by respiratory viruses. To elucidate pathogen prevalence, etiology of coinfections and URIs from symptomatic adult Emergency department patients in a pre-SARS-CoV-2 environment, we evaluated specimens from four geographically diverse Emergency departments in the United States from 2013-2014 utilizing ePlex RP RUO cartridges (Genmark Diagnostics). The overall positivity was 30.1% (241/799), with 6.6% (16/241) coinfections. Noninfluenza pathogens from most to least common were rhinovirus/enterovirus, coronavirus, human metapneumovirus and RSV, respectively. Broad differences in disease prevalence and pathogen distributions were observed across geographic regions; the site with the highest detection rate (for both mono and coinfections) demonstrated the greatest pathogen diversity. A variety of respiratory pathogens and geographic variations in disease prevalence and copathogen type were observed. Further research is required to evaluate the clinical relevance of these findings, especially considering the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and related questions regarding SARS-CoV-2 disease severity and the presence of co-infections. To evaluate determinants of prolonged viral RNA shedding in hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 positive nasopharyngeal RT-PCR were included in a single-center, retrospective study. Patients were divided in 2 groups according to the timing of viral clearance [≤14 days, "early clearance (EC)" and >14 days, "late clearance (LC)"]. 179 patients were included in the study (101 EC, 78 LC), with median age 62 years. Median time of viral shedding was 14 days (EC/LC 10 and 19 days, respectively, P < 0.0001). Univariate analyses showed that age, male gender, receiving corticosteroids, receiving tocilizumab, ICU admission, low albumin and NLR ratio were associated with late viral clearance. In the multivariable analysis, older age (P = 0.016), albumin level (P = 0.048), corticosteroids (P = 0.021), and tocilizumab (P = 0.015) were significantly associated with late viral clearance. Delirium is a common complication in intensive care unit (ICU) patients, and it can significantly increase the length of hospital stay and cost. Dexamethasone is widely used in various inflammatory diseases and must be used with caution in critically ill patients. Previous studies have shown that the effect of corticosteroid use on the development of delirium in critically ill patients is still controversial, and there is inconclusive conclusion about the effect of dexamethasone on delirium in such patients. Therefore, this study aimed to confirm the effect of dexamethasone use and the dose on the incidence of delirium and patient prognosis in critically ill patients through a large cohort study. A retrospective cohort study was conducted using data extracted from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care III database, which is a large and freely available database of all 46,476 patients who visited Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, USA and were admitted to the ICU betwene in critically ill patients exacerbated the occurrence of delirium while increasing the risk of in-hospital death, ICU death, and length of hospital stay, with a lower risk of delirium and a shorter total length of hospital stay with low-dose dexamethasone than with larger doses. Acute mesenteric ischemia arises through sudden interruption of mesenteric blood flow, mostly due to an occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery and is associated with a high mortality of approximately 50% to 90%. In previous studies, the single application of β-alanine or aprotinin caused an ameliorated intestinal damage but without any systemic effects. To analyze the combined effect of β-alanine and aprotinin on acute ischemia and reperfusion of the small intestine, a model with anesthetized rats was used. Ischemia and reperfusion were initiated by occluding and reopening the superior mesenteric artery. After 120min of ischemia and 180min of reperfusion, the intestine was analyzed for tissue damage, the activity of the saccharase, and accumulation of granulocytes. In addition, systemic and metabolic as well as inflammatory parameters were measured in blood at certain points in time. The combination of β-alanine and aprotinin resulted in a clearly stabilized mean arterial blood pressure and blood glucose level during the reperfusion period.
