A Confucian culture that stresses respect for the ancestors and gendered family relations continues to influence the way we live. There are signs that a secularist culture is gaining ground. Origins In the prehistoric era the ancestors of the modern Koreans lived on hunting and gathering wild food. Around 10,000 years ago, they began to grow crops including millet and beans. They also raised livestock and made furs. These people formed tribal states in succession in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also developed an industry of metalworking, making bronze tools and later iron ones. They traded with other states and introduced celadon, paper making block printing, art styles and a written language to Japan. In 2333 BCE Gojoseon was established in the southern region of the peninsula. The state embraced Buddhism and adopted Chinese culture including Confucian philosophy. In this period the inhabitants of Buyeo were incorporated into Gojoseon. Gojoseon was a hierarchical society with a monarch and top officials were drawn from the landed aristocracy whereas the rest of the population was peasants. The state collected taxes from these citizens and sometimes required them to serve in the army or take part in projects for the government like building fortifications. At the close of the period, the state of Baekje was founded by Onjo who was a prince of Goguryeo and the son of Jumong who was the founder of Goguryeo. The new kingdom grew into the southwest region of the peninsula, and fought against Goguryeo's commanderies and China's in the area. Baekje took on Confucian ideas into its state belief system in 1390 CE and established the male-centric
