In the present study, images featuring reptiles and firearms were employed as target and flanking stimuli in a modified version of the affective Flanker task. Forty-two participants (21 male) completed the modified Flanker task as EEG was recorded. Congruency effects in reaction times were more consistently observed for arrays with firearm targets than for arrays with reptile targets. Arrays with neutral targets (i.e., water pistols, turtles) evoked more negative mean N2 (250-400 ms) amplitudes than those with attack targets (i.e., attacking snakes, aimed handguns), while arrays with aimed handgun targets elicited more positive mean activity for the late positive component (LPC; 450-650 ms) compared to arrays with water pistol or reptile targets. Congruency effects were also found in N2 activity for arrays with firearm targets and reptile Flankers. In addition, LPC amplitude for incongruent arrays with attack targets and neutral Flankers was reduced compared to congruent attack arrays. These findings suggest that biological relevance influences interference processing (the N2) and intersects with attack intent during the later stages of picture processing (the LPC).Studying the functioning of the frontal lobe during the performance of an inhibitory activity according to automatic tendency of action would allow a better understanding of the relationship between the reflexive and impulsive system described in the dual-process models. This study aims to prove which is the inhibitory capacity and the underlying brain activity of people with alcohol-use disorder in abstinence with a greater avoidance tendency compared to those with a higher approach tendency and healthy controls. In order to group participants with AUD, the total approach/avoidance index (TAAI) - obtained from the modified alcohol approach/avoidance task - was used, therefore resulting in three groups TAAI- (TAAI Percentile 65 n = 20). In addition to this, 15 healthy controls were recruited. They all had an electroencephalographic recording while completing the modified stop-signal task. The results showed that the TAAI+ group had a worse inhibition compared to healthy controls. Moreover, the TAAI+ group showed a hyperactivation of the inferior frontal gyrus, precentral gyrus and orbital gyrus compared to the healthy controls group and the TAAI- group. The results obtained reflect that those people with AUD with a tendency to approach alcohol have a worse inhibitory capacity and a frontal hyperactivation. Moreover, people with AUD with an avoidance tendency to alcohol have also been found to have a similar inhibitory capacity and frontal activation to healthy controls.Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a neurodevelopmental syndrome characterized by impulsivity and distractibility, has been linked to blunted neural indicators of executive function and motivational processing. In the current study, we examined cross-sectional and prospective associations between P300 to feedback stimuli, the reward positivity (RewP), and interview-based and parent-reported ADHD symptoms in a sample of 300 female adolescents aged 8 to 14 who were re-assessed two years later. Cross-sectional analyses indicated that a smaller P300, but not RewP, was associated with greater interview-based and parent-reported ADHD symptoms. Moreover, both the P300 and RewP predicted interview-based symptom exacerbation among participants with some ADHD symptoms at baseline. These effects were found to be independent, supporting the notion of equifinal neurodevelopmental pathways to ADHD one related to executive function (P300) and the other to motivational processing (RewP). Our results suggest that incorporating psychophysiological measures into early assessment could be valuable for identifying youths likely to have a persistent course of ADHD.Dysfunctional performance monitoring has been proposed as a potential neurocognitive biomarker of various internalising psychopathological symptoms, such as anxiety, depressive, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Given the overlapping neurophysiological findings and high rates of comorbidity amongst these internalising symptoms, an important research gap pertains to the specificity of performance monitoring to each of these symptoms. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of anxiety, depressive, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms on performance monitoring in healthy adults. The sample consisted of 50 participants, with ages ranging from 18 to 33 years (M = 22.82, SD = 3.84). The Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales-21 and the Obsessive Compulsive Inventory-Revised were administered to assess the various internalising symptoms. An arrow flanker task was administered to elicit error responses whilst electrophysiological data were recorded from the scalp. Performance monitoring was indexed by the error-related negativity and correct response negativity. Bivariate correlations revealed that the three internalising symptoms were not associated with error-related negativity or correct response negativity amplitudes. However, a regression model revealed that greater levels of anxiety symptoms were uniquely associated with larger error-related negativity amplitude after controlling for depressive symptoms. In addition, greater levels of depressive symptoms were uniquely associated with smaller error-related negativity amplitude. Another regression model revealed that greater levels of depressive symptoms were uniquely associated with smaller correct response negativity amplitude after controlling for anxiety symptoms. These findings suggest that performance monitoring differentially associates with anxiety and depressive symptoms amongst healthy adults, providing some evidence of specificity for each respective symptoms.
