However, little is known about the significance of fathers' presence in contexts of environmental risk. In a unique social-political context of economic and sociopolitical adversity, this study examined relations between adolescent adjustment, fathers' presence, and family conflict in families in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Based on responses from 999 adolescents (M = 12.18 years; SD = 1.82) and their mothers, participating from 2006 to 2012, fathers' presence was linked with reduced internalizing symptoms, and family conflict was related to both internalizing and externalizing problems. The discussion considers the implications for understanding family dynamics related to adolescent adjustment in contexts of environmental adversity.Extraction is a key step in studying compounds from plants and other natural sources. The common use of high temperatures in pressurized microwave-assisted extraction (PMAE) makes it unsuitable for the extraction of compounds with low or unknown thermal stability. This study aimed at determining the suitability of low-temperature, short-time PMAE in attaining yields comparable to those of prolonged maceration at room temperature. Additionally, we explored the phytochemical differences of the extracts from both techniques. Maceration at room temperature for 24 hr and PMAE at 40-45°C and 10 bar for 30 min were carried out on 18 samples from 14 plant species at a solvent-to-feeds ratio of 10. The PMAE yields of 16 out of 18 samples were within the proportions of 91-139.2% as compared with the respective extracts from maceration. Varying numbers of nonmatching peaks were noted in MS chromatograms of five extract pairs, indicating selective extraction of some compounds. Low-temperature PMAE can attain reasonable extraction efficiency with the added value of sparing compounds of low thermal stability. The method can also enable the recovery of compounds distinct from those obtained by maceration.Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells are widely used in biopharmaceutical production. Improvements to cell lines and bioprocesses are constantly being explored. One of the major limitations of CHO cell culture is that the cells undergo apoptosis, leading to rapid cell death, which impedes reaching high recombinant protein titres. While several genetic engineering strategies have been successfully employed to reduce apoptosis, there is still room to further enhance CHO cell lines performance. 'Omics analysis is a powerful tool to better understand different phenotypes and for the identification of gene targets for engineering. Here, we present a comprehensive review of previous CHO 'omics studies that revealed changes in the expression of apoptosis-related genes. We highlight targets for genetic engineering that have reduced, or have the potential to reduce, apoptosis or to increase cell proliferation in CHO cells, with the final aim of increasing productivity.We consider a novel problem, bi-level graphical modeling, in which multiple individual graphical models can be considered as variants of a common group-level graphical model and inference of both the group- and individual-level graphical models is of interest. Such a problem arises from many applications, including multi-subject neuro-imaging and genomics data analysis. We propose a novel and efficient statistical method, the random covariance model, to learn the group- and individual-level graphical models simultaneously. The proposed method can be nicely interpreted as a random covariance model that mimics the random effects model for mean structures in linear regression. It accounts for similarity between individual graphical models, identifies group-level connections that are shared by individuals, and simultaneously infers multiple individual-level networks. Compared to existing multiple graphical modeling methods that only focus on individual-level graphical modeling, our model learns the group-level structure underlying the multiple individual graphical models and enjoys computational efficiency that is particularly attractive for practical use. The thymus, a gland integral in the fetal immune system, has been shown to involute in animal models of antenatal infection, but its response in human fetuses has not been studied. This study aims (a) to generate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) -derived fetal thymus volumes standardized for fetal weight; (b) to compare standardized thymus volumes from fetuses that delivered before 32weeks of gestation with fetuses that subsequently deliver at term; (c) to assess thymus size as a predictor of preterm birth; and (d) to correlate the presence of chorioamnionitis and funisitis at delivery with thymic volumes in utero in fetuses that subsequently deliver preterm. Women at high-risk of preterm birth at 20-32weeks of gestation were recruited. A control group was obtained from existing data sets acquired as part of three research studies.
