y China Lung Oncology Group and John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd.BACKGROUND Human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes illnesses among all age groups and presents a burden to healthcare services. To better understand the epidemiology and seasonality of RSV in different geographical areas, the World Health Organization (WHO) coordinated a pilot initiative to access the feasibility of establishing RSV surveillance using the existing Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS) platform. OBJECTIVES To describe and compare RSV and influenza seasonality in countries in the northern andsouthern temperate, and tropics during the period January 2017 to April 2019. METHODS Fourteen countries in six WHO regions participating in the GISRS were invited for the pilot. Hospitalized patients presenting with severe acute respiratory illness (SARI), SARI without fever and outpatients presenting with acute respiratory illness (ARI) were enrolled from January 2017 to April 2019. The expected minimum sample size was 20 samples per week, year-round, per country. Real-time RT-PCR was used to detect RSV and influenza viruses. Results were uploaded to the WHO FluMart platform. RESULTS Annual seasonality of RSV was observed in all countries, which overlapped to a large extent with the influenza activity. In countries, in temperate regions RSV peaked in the autumn/winter months. In Egypt, a subtropical country, RSV activity peaked in the cooler season. In the tropical regions, RSV peaked during the rainy seasons. CONCLUSION Early findings from the WHO RSV surveillance pilot based on the GISRS suggest annual seasonal patterns for of RSV circulation that overlap with influenza. RSV surveillance needs to be continued for several more seasons to establish seasonality patterns to inform prevention and control strategies. © 2020 The Authors. KGaA, Weinheim.Differentiation of human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) into vascular endothelium is of great importance to tissue engineering, disease modeling, and use in regenerative medicine. Although differentiation of hiPSCs into endothelial-like cells (hiPSC-derived endothelial cells [hiPSC-ECs]) has been demonstrated before, controversy exists as to what extent these cells faithfully reflect mature endothelium. To address this issue, we investigate hiPSC-ECs maturation by their ability to express von Willebrand factor (VWF) and formation of Weibel-Palade bodies (WPBs). Using multiple hiPSCs lines, hiPSC-ECs failed to form proper VWF and WPBs, essential for angiogenesis, primary and secondary homeostasis. Lowering the increased intracellular pH (pHi) of hiPSC-ECs with acetic acid did result in the formation of elongated WPBs. Nuclear magnetic resonance data showed that the higher pHi in hiPSC-ECs occurred in association with decreased intracellular lactate concentrations. This was explained by decreased glycolytic flux toward pyruvate and lactate in hiPSC-ECs. In addition, decreased expression of monocarboxylate transporter member 1, a member of the solute carrier family (SLC16A1), which regulates lactate and H+ uptake, contributed to the high pHi of hiPSC-EC. Mechanistically, pro-VWF dimers require the lower pH environment of the trans-Golgi network for maturation and tubulation. These data show that while hiPSC-ECs may share many features with mature EC, they are characterized by metabolic immaturity hampering proper EC function. © 2020 The Authors. Considerable evidence indicates that the perirhinal cortex (PRC) plays an important role in the perception of objects-namely, in disambiguating complex objects that share conjunctions of features. These findings support a content-specific view of medial temporal lobe functioning in which PRC is critically important for processing complex objects, while the parahippocampal cortex (PHC) and hippocampus (HC) may be selectively engaged during scene processing. However, emerging evidence from both animal and human studies suggest that the PRC is sensitive to spatial configural information as well as object information. In this fMRI study, we observed preliminary evidence for BOLD activation in the PRC during a complex visual discrimination task for objects and scenes, as well as robust activation for both stimulus types in PHC and HC. The results are discussed in light of a recent process-based model of medial temporal lobe functioning. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.BACKGROUND Dyslipidaemias result from the interaction between genetic and environmental factors, including diet disequilibrium and physical inactivity. Among the genetic factors associated with serum lipids, the Taq1B CETP polymorphism has been investigated. The B1 allele has been considered as a risk factor for dyslipidaemia because of its association with greater CETP levels and higher serum triglycerides. The present study aimed to determine the role of the Taq1B polymorphism with lipid and anthropometric variables and its interaction with diet and physical activity. METHODS In total, 215 subjects were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Diet intake was evaluated using a 3-day food consumption record and physical activity was determined in accordance with World Health Organization recommendations. The Taq1B CETP polymorphism was determined by allelic discrimination. RESULTS Subjects with the B1B2/B2B2 genotype, who had a sucrose consumption ≥5% of the total kcal day-1 , had higher levels of total cholesterol (TC) [165.
