To evaluate the usefulness of serum squamous-cell carcinoma antigen (SCC-Ag) and 2-[ F]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) for the detection of recurrent squamous-cell carcinoma (SqCC) of the uterine cervix, and its prediction of patient survival. FDG-PET/CT was performed for patients with serum SCC-Ag levels elevated to ≥1.5 ng/mL (Group 1) and those with suspicious recurrences without any increase in serum SCC-Ag levels (Group 2). The results were analyzed on the basis of histological data, disease progression and/or clinical follow-up. Recurrence was defined as evidence of recurrent lesions within 6 months of FDG-PET/CT. The outcome was determined using medical records. In total, 88 consecutive patients with cervical SqCC cancer with suspected recurrence (62 in Group 1 and 26 in Group 2) were enrolled. Recurrences were observed in 55 patients (77.4% (48/62) in Group 1 vs. 26.9% (7/26) in Group 2, < 0.001). The overall sensitivity, specificity as a prognostic biomarker of survival in patients with recurrent cervical cancer. Serum SCC-Ag could predict tumor recurrence and the survival of patients with SqCC cervical cancer. As such, the surgical resection of limited recurrent disease, as determined using FDG-PET/CT, might improve the survival of patients with cervical cancer. MTV and TLG may serve as a prognostic biomarker of survival in patients with recurrent cervical cancer.The excitatory synaptic transmission is mediated by glutamate in neuronal networks of the mammalian brain. In addition to the synaptic glutamate, extra-synaptic glutamate is known to modulate the neuronal activity. In neuronal networks, glutamate uptake is an important role of neurons and glial cells for lowering the concentration of extracellular glutamate and to avoid the excitotoxicity by glutamate. Monitoring the spatial distribution of intracellular glutamate is important to study the uptake of glutamate, but the approach has been hampered by the absence of appropriate glutamate analogs that report the localization of glutamate. Deuterium-labeled glutamate (GLU-D) is a promising tracer for monitoring the intracellular concentration of glutamate, but physiological properties of GLU-D have not been studied. Here we study the effects of extracellular GLU-D for the neuronal activity by using primary cultured rat hippocampal neurons that form neuronal networks on microelectrodes array. The frequency of firing in the spontaneous activity of neurons increased with the increasing concentration of extracellular GLU-D. The frequency of synchronized burst activity in neurons increased similarly as we observed in the spontaneous activity. These changes of the neuronal activity with extracellular GLU-D were suppressed by antagonists of glutamate receptors. These results suggest that GLU-D can be used as an analog of glutamate with equivalent effects for facilitating the neuronal activity. We anticipate GLU-D developing as a promising analog of glutamate for studying the dynamics of glutamate during neuronal activity.A simple, compact, and highly sensitive gas pressure sensor based on a Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) with a silicone rubber (SR) diaphragm is demonstrated. The SR diaphragm is fabricated on the tip of a silica tube using capillary action followed by spin coating. This process ensures uniformity of its inner surface along with reproducibility. A segment of single mode fiber (SMF) inserted into this tube forms the FPI which produces an interference pattern with good contrast. The sensor exhibits a high gas pressure sensitivity of -0.68 nm/kPa along with a low temperature cross-sensitivity of ≈ 1.1 kPa/°C.The aims of the study were to determine the socio-demographic factors that may affect body weight dissatisfaction and to analyze the relationship between eating habits and dissatisfaction with body weight among a national random sample of Polish adolescents aged 13-19 years. Data on gender, age, level of education, body weight status, screen time, body weight satisfaction and selected nutritional behaviors were collected using a questionnaire. Body mass status was assessed based on weight and height measurements. A total of 14,044 students from 207 schools participated in the study. A significant effect of gender, age, level of education, body weight status and screen time status on the participants' dissatisfaction with the body weight was observed. The greater prevalence of body weight satisfaction was observed among boys, younger subjects, secondary school students, adolescents with normal body weight status and those with screen time up to 2 h. Whereas girls, older study participants (17-19 years old), overweight/obese adolescents and subjects with screen time over 4 h were more often dissatisfied with body weight. Furthermore, it has been shown that participants dissatisfied with their body weight less often met dietary recommendations. These findings can help dietitians, nutritionists and healthcare professionals to provide age-specific and gender-specific nutrition strategies to promote healthy lifestyle among school-going adolescents.This study investigated the recovery stress and bond resistance of cold drawn crimped SMA fiber using two different initial diameters of 1.0 and 0.7 mm. The maximum pullout resistance of the crimped fiber was a function of the wave depth, embedded length, yield strength, and flexural rigidity of the fiber.
