OBJECTIVES The objective of our study was to conduct a systematic literature review of economic costs (henceforth costs) associated with myasthenia gravis (MG). METHODS We searched MEDLINE (through PubMed), CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science for studies reporting costs of MG published from inception up until March 18, 2020, without language restrictions. Two reviewers independently screened records for eligibility, extracted the data, and assessed included studies for risk of bias using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Costs were inflated and converted to 2018 United States dollars ($). RESULTS The search identified 16 articles for data extraction and synthesis. Estimates of costs of MG were found for samples from eight countries spanning four continents (Europe, North America, South America, and Asia). Across studies, the mean per-patient annual direct medical cost of illness was estimated at between $760 and $28,780, and cost per hospitalization between $2550 and $164,730. The indirect cost of illness was estimated at $80 and $3550. Costs varied considerably by patient characteristics, and drivers of the direct medical cost of illness included intravenous immunoglobulin and plasma exchange, myasthenic crisis, mechanical ventilatory support, and hospitalizations. CONCLUSIONS We show that the current body of literature of costs of MG is sparse, limited to a few geographical settings and resource categories, mostly dated, and subject to non-trivial variability, both within and between countries. Our synthesis will help researchers and decision-makers identify gaps in the local health economic context of MG and inform future cost studies and economic evaluations in this patient population.Activated macrophages are the primary targets in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) management. So, we report efficacious, dual-functional Methotrexate (MTX) loaded folate-conjugated pH-responsive glycol-chitosan nanoparticles (MFGCN) prepared by nano-precipitation and zero-order cross-linking reaction for targeting inflamed arthritic tissue. Physical characterization by DLS, SEM and TEM indicated a spherical, smooth morphology with a diameter ~ 300 nm. 1H NMR and FTIR indicated folic acid conjugation to GC by zero-order cross-linkers. In vitro release kinetics in PBS showed pH-responsive and sustained release behaviour of MFGCN. Enhanced cellular uptake and cytotoxicity of MFGCN in LPS(+)RAW and activated peritoneal macrophages (Mϕ) were observed when compared to LPS(-)RAW cells. MFGCN-induced mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) perturbations indicated apoptosis. Oxidative stress was evident by significant increase in ROS and RNS, 4 h post incubation with MFGCN. Negligible hemolysis by FGCN and MFGCN on rat RBC's indicated biocompatibility. In vivo biodistribution of MFGCN in adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) rats indicated RA targetability. Prolonged blood circulation coupled with higher concentrations of 99mTc-MFGCN at the arthritic site was observed post 24 h of injection. The gamma scintigraphic image confirmed accumulation of radiolabelled MFGCN in arthritic paw when compared to the non-inflamed paw, confirming the selective uptake of 99mTc-MFGCN by folate-overexpressing macrophages in the arthritic synovium thereby proving its targeted efficacy and theranostic potential. In AIA rats, MFGCN lowers arthritic signs, improves antioxidant response and decreases pro-inflammatory cytokines, suggesting its potential in targeting activated macrophages of synovium. Graphical abstract.In the original version of this article Ana Guzman-Aranguez's name appeared incorrect.This study aims to explore the antimicrobial activity of rifampicin (RIF) and ascorbic acid (ASC) co-loaded into alginate (ALG)/chitosan (CS) nanoparticles (RIF/ASC NPs) and tested for their antibacterial activity against several strains of methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Also, the present research focused on exploring the possible antibacterial mechanism of action of these RIF/ASC NPs, which demonstrated a significant biocide activity against the S. aureus strains with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) between 2- and 8-fold lower than those one exhibited with the free antibiotic RIF. In summary, findings from this work show that our novel designed engineered RIF/ASC co-loaded NPs could be a suitable system for antibiotic lung administration with promising perspectives for effective treatments of pulmonary intracellular infections for those known antibiotics that are losing effectiveness due to antimicrobial resistance problems. Graphical Abstract.Raman and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy was used for investigation of structural differences of bacterial celluloses (BC), obtained by cultivation native and immobilized cells of Gluconacetobacter sucrofermentans during static and dynamic regimes of cultivation on a molasses media. It was found that the Raman and FT-IR spectra could characterized the groups of the cellulose molecules. The culturing bacterial cellulose in the presence of results in an increase of crystalline and it increased during cultivated on a molasses media with the addition of 1.5% ethanol-75.62%. The degree of BC crystallinity increased during dynamic regime of cultivation is higher than under static regime one. The maximal BC content was observed when 0.5% ascorbic acid was added to the cultivation medium with molasses and native cells. It was found, the degree of BC crystallinity during static regime cultivation on a molasses medium with ethanol, increased significantly to 73.5%, and during dynamic regime-75.6%. So, in this study, the changes of the bacterial cellulose conformation of were revealed during bacterial cultivation in a medium containing molasses in various cultivation modes.
