In our study, we characterized the associated bacterial communities of Bt-resistant and -susceptible western corn rootworms, a widespread pest of maize in the United States. We found resistant insects harbor a bacterial community that is less rich and distinct from susceptible insects. After feeding on Bt-expressing maize, susceptible insects exhibited dysbiosis of the associated bacterial community, whereas the community within resistant insects remained relatively unchanged. These results suggest resistance to Bt produces alterations in the microbiome of the western corn rootworm that may contribute to resistance. We further demonstrated that by itself, feeding on Bt toxin-expressing seedlings caused a shift in the microbiota. The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of body mass index with regard to exercise performance, exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB), and respiratory symptoms in 7- to 16-year-old children. A total of 1120 outdoor running exercise challenge test results of 7- to 16-year-old children were retrospectively reviewed. Lung function was evaluated with spirometry, and exercise performance was assessed by calculating distance per 6 minutes from the running time and distance. Respiratory symptoms in the exercise challenge test were recorded, and body mass index modified for children (ISO-BMI) was calculated for each child from height, weight, age, and gender according to the national growth references. Greater ISO-BMI and overweight were associated with poorer exercise performance (P<.001). In addition, greater ISO-BMI was independently associated with cough (P=.002) and shortness of breath (P=.012) in the exercise challenge. However, there was no association between ISO-BMI and EIB or with wheeze during the exercise challenge. In this study we evaluated anatomic variations of the superficial branch of the radial nerve (SBRN) and the dorsal branch of the ulnar nerve (DBUN) electrophysiologically. Antidromic nerve conduction studies (NCS) of the SBRN and DBUN were performed on healthy individuals. To identify individual responses from the distal branches of the SBRN and DBUN, sensory nerve action potentials of each finger (lateral side/medial side) were recorded. NCS were performed in 50 hands of 27 healthy control subjects. The thumb and the index finger were supplied by the SBRN in all cases. The lateral and medial sides of the third finger were supplied by the SBRN in 94.0% and 74.0% of the cases, but the lateral and medial sides of the fourth finger were supplied by the SBRN in only 10.0% and 2.0% of cases. Thus, growth factors secreted by the oocyte, like Growth and Differentiation Factor 9 (GDF9) and Bone Morphogenetic Protein 15 (BMP15), play an important part in the luteinization of granulosa cells. The aim of this work was to express GDF9 and BMP15 genes in bovine GCs in vitro and evaluate their effects on the luteinization process. Samples of culture medium and GCs transfected with GDF9 and BMP15 were obtained for 21 consecutive days to analyse the steroidogenic hormones' concentration (progesterone (P4 ) and estradiol (E2 )) and the expression of STAR, GDF9 and BMP15 and their respective receptors. The results demonstrated an inhibitory effect of GDF9 and BMPF15 on P4 secretion in bovine GCs cultured in vitro. Moreover, our study demonstrated the entire expression of their respective receptors (TGFBR1, BMPR1B and BMPR2) and the inhibition of the steroidogenic marker, STAR gene.
