The cultivable fungal diversity from PAH-contaminated sediments was examined for the tolerance to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH). The 85 fungal strains, isolated in non-selective media, revealed a large diversity by ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing, even including possible new species. Most strains (64%) exhibited PAH-tolerance, indicating that sediments retain diverse cultivable PAH-tolerant fungi. The PAH-tolerance was linked neither to a specific taxon nor to the peroxidase genes (LiP, MnP and Lac). Examining the PAH-removal (degradation and/or sorption), Alternaria destruens F10.81 showed the best capacity with above 80% removal for phenanthrene, pyrene and fluoranthene, and around 65% for benzo[a]pyrene. A. destruens F10.81 internalized pyrene homogenously into the hyphae that contrasted with Fusarium pseudoygamai F5.76 in which PAH-vacuoles were observed but PAH removal was below 20%. Thus, our study paves the way for the exploitation of fungi in remediation strategies to mitigate the effect of PAH in coastal marine sediments.This study investigates the influence of upwelling induced seasonal hypoxia in the sediment-water interface on the distribution, bioavailability and geochemical partitioning of selected trace metals in surficial sediments along the southwest coast of India based on two successive cruises. The first cruise was during the southwest monsoon (SWM) season when coastal waters exhibited intermittent bottom hypoxia due to upwelling. The second cruise during the northeast monsoon (NEM) season was characterised by a uniformly warm and well-oxygenated water column in the study region. The results showed that grain size, organic carbon and Fe are the major factors influencing the distribution of trace metals in the surface sediments. Based on the geochemical indices (contamination factor, enrichment factor and geo-accumulation factor), the study region appears to be moderately contaminated by Ni, Cr, and Pb. Based on the ecological risk assessment criteria, the enrichment of Pb, Cr and Ni may cause adverse effects on the benthic organisms. The fractionation studies demonstrated that the major pathway of metal deposition in the sediment is lithogenic. The data also showed that labile and organic fractions are the second dominant forms, while other fractions (exchangeable and carbonate) are insignificant. The consistency in the reactive Fe concentrations during SWM and NEM could be due to the absence of Fe dissolution in sediments under mild reducing condition (intermittent hypoxia). In this study, sediments of the estuary of 17 rivers, ending to the Caspian Sea, were evaluated at two depths (0-5 cm and 5-15 cm). Plastic particles were categorized into two groups in terms of size small MPs and large MPs. The combination of observational techniques, FTIR, and SEM analysis was applied to identify MPs. The mean of MPs in 17 rivers was obtained at a depth of 0 to 15 cm of sediments 350.6 ± 232.6 MP/kg. The fiber was identified as the predominant particles in sediments, and foam-shaped particles were the least amount in the sediment. In terms of polymer structure, polyethylene (PE) (20%) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) (2%) showed the highest and lowest prevalence, respectively. In the current study, the number of MPs was higher than the average of MPs in sediments of recreational-tourist areas and non-tourist areas of the southern Caspian coast. Results from this study indicate that sediments of the rivers' estuary are a hotspot of plastic particle pollution. Therefore, plastic management in the path of the Caspian catchment area of Iran, and cleaning rivers coast and rivers mouth from plastic is recommended.The abundance of 137Cs radionuclide in the Mediterranean Sea has limited study despite its environmental effects in seafood chains. For this purpose, the activity concentration of 137Cs in sediment and seawater have been determined using a high-resolution HPGe gamma-spectrometry system. The average activity concentrations in sediment and water were 14.16 Bq kg-1 and 1.74 mBq L-1, respectively. The results were used as input data of ERICA Tool modelling software to assess marine organisms' accumulation and dose. The highest and lowest accumulate activity concentration values were observed in birds (9.24E-01 Bq kg-1) and the Vascular plant (1.37E-02 Bq kg1), respectively. The number and frequency of occurrence of this species in fishing gear (up to 10 individuals per fyke net), the presence of juveniles and ovigerous females as well as its presence in the local market, show that it is well established. The objectives of this study were to identify potential predictive biomarkers of metritis, to monitor the biochemical profile of pre-metritic dairy cows, and to evaluate the reproductive performance of dairy cows with metritis. Fifty-five cows without metritis and fifteen cows that showed clinical signs of metritis were enrolled in this study.
