Nowadays, thanks to extensive studies and progress in precision medicine, pediatric leukemia has reached an extremely high overall survival rate. Nonetheless, a fraction of relapses and refractory cases is still present, which are frequently correlated with poor prognosis. Although several molecular features of these diseases are known, still the field of energy metabolism, which is widely studied in adult, has not been frequently explored in childhood leukemias. Metabolic reprogramming is a hallmark of cancer and is deeply connected with other genetic and signaling aberrations generally known to be key features of both acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). This review aims to clear the current knowledge on metabolic rewiring in pediatric ALL and AML, also highlighting the influence of the main signaling pathways and suggesting potential ideas to further exploit this field to discover new prognostic biomarkers and, above all, beneficial therapeutic options.The heat-exchanger/reactor (HEX reactor) is a kind of plug-flow chemical reactor which combines high heat transfer ability with good chemical performances. It was designed under the popular trend of process intensification in chemical engineering. Previous studies have investigated its characteristics and developed its nominal model. This paper is concerned with its fault tolerant control (FTC) applications. To avoid the difficulties and nonlinearities of this HEX reactor under chemical reactions, a two-layer, multiple-model structure is proposed for designing the FTC scheme. The first layer focuses on representing the nonlinear system with a bank of local linear models while the second layer uses model banks for approaching faulty situations. Model banks are achieved by system identification, and the corresponding controller banks are designed using model predictive control (MPC). The unscented Kalman filter (UKF) is introduced to estimate the states and form the fault detection and isolation (FDI) section. Finally, the FTC simulation and validation results are presented. The idea of a two-layer, multiple-model structure presents a general framework for FTC design of complex and highly nonlinear systems, such as the HEX reactor, whose mathematical model has been created. It implements the design process in an unusual way and is also worth trying on other cases.Wheat production can be severely damaged by endemic and invasive insect pests. Here, we investigated resistance to cereal leaf beetle in a panel of 876 winter wheat cultivars, and dissected the genetic architecture underlying this insect resistance by association mapping. We observed an effect of heading date on cereal leaf beetle infestation, with earlier heading cultivars being more heavily infested. Flag leaf glaucousness was also found to be correlated with resistance. In line with the strong effect of heading time, we identified Ppd-D1 as a major quantitative trait locus (QTL), explaining 35% of the genotypic variance of cereal leaf beetle resistance. The other identified putative QTL explained much less of the genotypic variance, suggesting a genetic architecture with many small-effect QTL, which was corroborated by a genomic prediction approach. Collectively, our results add to our understanding of the genetic control underlying insect resistances in small-grain cereals.Bullous central serous chorioretinopathy (bCSCR) is a rare variant of the central serous chorioretinopathy, complicated by an exudative retinal detachment with shifting fluid. This systematic review aims to present the epidemiology, the pathogenesis, the clinical presentation, the imaging, the differential diagnosis, and the latest treatments of this disease. A total of 60 studies were identified following a literature search adhering to PRISMA guidelines. After full-text evaluation, 34 studies about bCSCR were included. bCSCR usually affects middle-aged men, and the principal risk factor is corticosteroid medications. Pathogenesis is related to an increased choroidal vessel and choriocapillaris permeability, with subsequent subretinal fluid accumulation, rich in fibrin, which may provoke the exudative retinal detachment. Clinical presentation and imaging are fundamental to distinguish bCSCR from other pathologies, avoiding unappropriated treatment. Corticosteroid withdraws (if assumed) and laser photocoagulation of leakage sites seen at angiography may speed up retinal reattachment. Verteporfin photodynamic therapy, transpupillary thermal therapy, oral eplerenone and scleral thinning surgery are other therapeutic options. This review highlights some important aspects of recent studies, many of which have revealed issues involving the effect of contamination of microbial samples from both technical and environmental sources and their impacts on microbiome research and the potential forensic applications of microbial profiling. It is imperative that these challenges be discussed and evaluated within a forensic context to better understand the future directions and potential applications of microbial profiling for human identification. It is necessary that the limitations identified be resolved prior to the adoption of microbial profiling, or, at a minimum, acknowledged by those applying this new approach.
