https://middledead3.bravejournal.net/10-basics-about-double-sided-wood-burner-you-didnt-learn-in-the-classroom How to Properly Start a Wood Burning Stove Wood stoves are an excellent option to conserve energy and heat rooms. They will require some maintenance. A majority of modern wood stoves comply with EPA emission guidelines. Look for an EPA sticker on the underside or next to the grate, to ensure that your stove doesn't generate lots of harmful pollutants. How to start a Wood Fire The scent and sound of a fire can be an excellent addition to any home. However, it is important to know how to properly build a fire in your stove. Improper techniques can result in a fire which does not burn effectively, and can produce smoke or creosote. These tips can help you create an efficient fire that will warm your home quickly and effectively. Make sure to check the condition of your coals and logs before you start a fire. If they are too wet they will choke the fire and prevent it from burning properly. You may also want to open the flue to let out any ash that has fallen into the stove. Begin by placing a handful of small dry pieces of newspaper into your stove. This will help to ignite the sparks. When the tinder and the kindling are beginning to ignite, you can add an additional layer of larger pieces on the top. This should be done with an arc pattern so that there is air between each piece. If you own wood stoves that have an automatic control for combustion it will automatically supply an air stream controlled to your flame as it heats. This will help the fire to burn at a consistent pace without having to open the stove's doors to tend it. Do not use excessive tinder since it will cause the fire to burn at an extremely fast rate and not use the fuel effectively. If you have a nice bed of tinder and kindling in your stove, begin the main fire by placing two large base logs across the grill. Then, on the top of these base woods lay a layer parallel to them.
