The climacteric period is characterized by huge hormonal changes. Women can undergo a range of cognitive and emotional changes during this time. These changes can mimic ADHD symptoms in a number of instances. In this period during this time, women can suffer from the classic ADHD symptoms of impulsivity, hyperactivity and inattention. These symptoms may not always be caused by other co-morbidities. The estrogen levels of women can decrease by as much as 65 percent when she enters menopausal. This affects the brain and neurotransmitters which control emotion and cognition. The loss of estrogen could cause symptoms of ADHD in women. Estrogen loss causes a decrease in dopamine levels. This may make it more difficult to focus on tasks and to concentrate. It also affects cognitive and memory functions. ADHD symptoms can be made worse by a decrease in dopamine levels for females. Sexual dysfunction may also be a result of menopausal. In fact, 88% of women suffer from some form of sexual dysfunction after menopausal changes. Many women are worried about their performance on the job during this period. Many women have developed a variety of coping strategies for dealing with ADHD.
