The association between hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and maternal, obstetric and newborn outcomes remains controversial, as previous studies have reported conflicting and inconsistent results on the matter. The aim was to investigate whether HBV infection increases the risk of maternal, obstetric and newborn complications. We conducted a systematic literature review, according to PRISMA statement guidelines. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they were observational cohort, case-control or cross-sectional studies, comparing maternal, obstetric or newborn complications in HBV-infected and uninfected pregnant women. PubMed was searched for published literature in English, with no date restrictions, using combinations of keywords. The titles and abstracts were independently screened for eligibility by three authors. Two authors assessed the quality of each included study and no meta-analysis was performed. Seven studies are of good quality, which makes their results more reliable. Three of them revealed that maternal HBV infection increased the risk of miscarriage, preterm birth, pregnancy-induced hypertension, fetal distress and macrosomia. These three studies were performed in China and the one with the largest number of participants only included women from rural areas. Larger, more robust, well-designed prospective cohort studies are needed. These must include adjusted estimates for confounding factors, such as other possible complications determinants, like the antenatal care quality.MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in biological processes by regulating specific gene expression. Limited miRNAs information is available on embryonic development in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) so far. In this study, six important embryonic development stages of C.carpio were collected to perform a times-series of small RNA-seq experiments from cleavage, blastocyst, gastrulation, organ formation, hatching stage to 1 day post-hatching larva. The expression profiles of miRNAs were identified and differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) were screened out based on pairwise comparison. A mean of 12,744,989 raw reads and 9,888,123 clean reads were obtained from each library. A total of 2565 miRNAs were identified. 68 of 204 DEMs were overlapped with stage-specific miRNAs, in which 15 were known miRNAs and seemed to play a key role in embryogenesis. Additionally, time-course expression reveals several intriguing fluctuations during embryogenesis. Numerous signaling pathways were identified in embryonic development, including the phototransduction, hippo signaling pathway, Wnt, melanogenesis, histidine metabolism and fatty acid biosynthesis. The results would provide new insight into the roles of miRNAs in embryonic development, and would help us to advance the understanding of miRNA-mediated mechanisms in embryonic development of fish.Studies that investigate the expression of genes related to the tenderness of meat from entire and immunocastrated male pigs have not yet been performed. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between gender (entire male and immunocastrated) and the meat quality of pigs, as well as to quantify the expression of calpain-1 and the calpastatin gene. Regarding carcass measurements and meat quality, boars presented lower values of muscle depth (P = 0.028), subcutaneous fat thickness (P = 0.046), L* value (P = 0.004) and cook loss (P = 0.008) than the immunocastrated pigs. The boars presented greater calpain-1 gene expression (P = 0.006) and lower calpastatin gene expression (P = 0.003) than immunocastrated pigs. This study shows that combined with other factors the gene expression can contribute to a tender meat from boars due to their higher calpain-1 expression and lower calpastatin expression than those of immunocastrated male pigs.Fibroadenomas are the most common benign breast lesions in women. Hormonal activities, particularly an increase in oestrogenic activity, have an important role in the aetiology of fibroadenomas. They are commonly detected incidentally. Most fibroadenomas have similar imaging findings and these lesions can be defined as simple fibroadenomas (SFAs). However, due to different histopathologic characteristics and components, variants of fibroadenomas have been described. These variants include; juvenile, giant, complex, myxoid, cellular, and hyalinised fibroadenomas. The diagnoses of these variants are important. They have different clinical behaviours, potential for malignant transformation, and treatment strategies. We present imaging findings of SFAs and other variants of fibroadenomas. Research has focused on harm reduction in adults using e-cigarettes to stop or reduce traditional cigarette use, but the short and long-term safety of these products has not been established. Vaping has more recently been associated with a growing list of pulmonary complications with the most urgent being the e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) epidemic. This review details the inhalant toxicology of vaping products, the described lung diseases associated with vaping with a focus on EVALI, and the predicted long-term consequences of e-cigarette use, including increased asthma severity.
