Escherichia coli is one of the most well-adapted and pathogenically versatile bacterial organisms. It causes a variety of human infections, including gastrointestinal illnesses and extraintestinal infections. It is also part of the intestinal commensal flora of humans and other mammals. Groups of E. coli that cause diarrhea are often described as intestinal pathogenic E. coli (IPEC), while those that cause infections outside of the gut are called extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC). IPEC can cause a variety of diarrheal illnesses as well as extraintestinal syndromes such as hemolytic-uremic syndrome. ExPEC cause urinary tract infections, bloodstream infection, sepsis, and neonatal meningitis. IPEC and ExPEC have thus come to be referred to as pathogenic variants of E. coli or pathovars. While IPEC can be distinguished from commensal E. coli based on their characteristic virulence factors responsible for their associated clinical manifestations, ExPEC cannot be so easily distinguished. IPEC most likely have reservoirs outside of the human intestine but it is unclear if ExPEC represent nothing more than commensal E. coli that breach a sterile barrier to cause extraintestinal infections. This question has become more complicated by the advent of whole genome sequencing (WGS) that has raised a new question about the taxonomic characterization of E. coli based on traditional clinical microbiologic and phylogenetic methods. This review discusses how molecular epidemiologic approaches have been used to address these questions, and how answers to these questions may contribute to our better understanding of the epidemiology of infections caused by E. coli. *This article is part of a curated collection.Background Lumbosacral orthosis (LSO) and/or the isolated contraction of the transversus abdominis muscle by the abdominal drawing-in maneuver (ADIM) can increase lumbar stiffness, consequently influencing postural control. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of LSO and ADIM on postural control during two balance tasks and determine their reliability. Methods Twenty participants (50% men) randomly performed three experimental conditions 1) without lumbar stabilization, 2) with LSO), and 3) with ADIM. Each experimental condition was tested in two postural tasks semi-tandem and one-legged stance on a force platform for 30 seconds, while the Center of pressure postural (COP) parameters were computed. Results The two methods of lumbar stabilization were comparable and did not significantly reduce the COP values across time, even though a few individuals presented a change in their COP data above the levels of measurement errors. The reliability of these measurements was generally acceptable and sometimes excellent ( ≥ 0.90 and ≤10% error measurement). Conclusions Both LSO and isolated contraction of the transversus abdominis muscle by ADIM do not change postural control in one-legged stance and in semi-tandem tasks. These results have implications for use or not these methods for postural control on a rehabilitation perspective.This study validated the COVID-19 Phobia Scale (C19P-SE) based on data collected from 227 adults in the United States. Results indicated that the C19P-SE has adequate reliability (α = .93) along with factorial, discriminant, and convergent validity. Results of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) supported the four-factor structure of the C19P-SE. Concurrent validity results indicate a significant positive correlation between coronaphobia and state anxiety (r = .67, p less then .001), suggesting that individuals with higher levels of coronaphobia may also have higher levels of state anxiety or vice versa. Death anxiety and psychological distress were examined in the context of work status. A sample of 478 from the general population voluntarily participated in the study. Findings revealed a significant moderating role of work status, illustrating the strong relationship between psychological distress and death anxiety for non-working participants. Therefore, psychological distress is related to more significant death anxiety among non-working than those who are working. This study highlights the importance of work as an anxiety buffering factor concerning mortality thoughts.Printable metalenses composed of a silicon nanocomposite are developed to overcome the manufacturing limitations of conventional metalenses. The nanocomposite is synthesized by dispersing silicon nanoparticles in a thermally printable resin, which not only achieves a high refractive index for high-efficiency metalenses but also printing compatibility for inexpensive manufacturing of metalenses. The synthesized nanocomposite exhibits high refractive index >2.2 in the near-infrared regime, and only 10% uniform volume shrinkage after thermal annealing, so the nanocomposite is appropriate for elaborate nanofabrication compared to commercial high-index printable materials. We carried out a wide revision of the anatomy of secondary xylem in spermatophytes and reconstructed the evolution of the different anatomical markers in a time-calibrated phylogeny. By embodying a functionally and evolutionarily significant concept in growth rings we reveal a new panorama for their frequency and show how common they are in diverse lineages of tropical plants. In this context, the principal anatomical markers of growth rings are identified in the evolutionary history of plants and their association with climate-related ecological characteristics. We discuss the function of these anatomical markers, especially for thick-walled and/or radially flattened latewood fibres, fibre zone and dilated rays. Despite the high evolutionary lability of the anatomical markers evidenced by our analyses, they appear to represent deep homologies.
