5) correlated with altitude and temperature. A moderate correlation was also found between temperature and elements such as Ba, Fe, Mn, Ni and Sr in the pulp and peel samples. The PCA results and correlation analysis suggested that the differences of banana compositions were combined effects of geographical factors and production systems. Ultimately, the findings contribute towards understanding the compositional differences of bananas due to different growing conditions and production systems linked to a defined origin; thereby offering a tool to support the traceability of commercial fruits.Pneumocystis jirovecii is a fungal pathogen that can cause life-threatening infections in individuals who are immunocompromised. Acquired via inhalation, upon entering the respiratory tract, the fungi first encounter innate immune cells such as alveolar macrophages (AMs). Relatively little is known about the AM cellular responses to the organism, and particularly transcription factor (TF) profiles leading to early host responses during infection. Utilizing the Mouse Transcription Factors RT2 Profiler™ PCR Array, we report an initial TF survey of these macrophage and Pneumocystis interactions. Expression levels of a panel of mouse TFs were compared between unstimulated and Pneumocystis murina-stimulated AMs. Interestingly, a number of TFs previously implicated in pathogen-host cell interactions were highly up- or downregulated, including hif1a and Pparg. qPCR experiments were further conducted to verify the results of these surveyed transcripts. Furthermore, with immunoblotting, we show that HIF-1A and PPAR-γ are indeed significantly upregulated and downregulated, respectively. Lastly, and importantly, we report that in the mouse model of Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP), which mimics human Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP), qPCR analysis of Pneumocystis murina lungs also mimic the initial TF profile analysis, suggesting an importance for these TFs in immunocompromised hosts with Pneumocystis pneumonia. These data demonstrate the use of TF profiling in host AMs and Pneumocystis organism interactions that may lead to a better understanding of the specific inflammatory responses of the host to Pneumocystis pneumonia and may inform novel strategies for potential therapeutics. The prevalence of diabetes is on the increase worldwide, being one of the fastest growing international health emergencies in the 21st century [...].The development of armour systems with higher ballistic resistance and light weight has gained considerable attention as an increasing number of countries are recognising the need to build up advanced self-defence system to deter potential military conflicts and threats. Graphene is a two dimensional one-atom thick nanomaterial which possesses excellent tensile strength (130 GPa) and specific penetration energy (10 times higher than steel). It is also lightweight, tough and stiff and is expected to replace the current aramid fibre-based polymer composites. Currently, insights derived from the study of the nacre (natural armour system) are finding applications on the development of artificial nacre structures using graphene-based materials that can achieve high toughness and energy dissipation. The aim of this review is to discuss the potential of graphene-based nanomaterials with regard to the penetration energy, toughness and ballistic limit for personal body armour applications. This review addresses the cutting-edge research in the ballistic performance of graphene-based materials through theoretical, experimentation as well as simulations. The influence of fabrication techniques and interfacial interactions of graphene-based bioinspired polymer composites for ballistic application are also discussed. This review also covers the artificial nacre which is shown to exhibit superior mechanical and toughness behaviours.Eclampsia is diagnosed in pregnant women who develop novel seizures. Our laboratory showed that the reduced uterine perfusion pressure (RUPP) rat model of preeclampsia displays reduced latency to drug-induced seizures. While acid sensing ion channels (ASIC1a and 3) are important for reducing seizure longevity and severity, the role of ASIC2a in mediating seizure sensitivity in pregnancy has not been investigated. We hypothesized that 1) RUPP reduces hippocampal ASIC2a, and 2) pregnant mice with reduced ASIC2a (ASIC2a+/-) have increased seizure sensitivity. On gestational day 18.5, hippocampi from sham and RUPP C57BL/6 mice were harvested, and ASIC2a was assessed using Western blot. Pregnant wild-type and ASIC2a+/- mice received 40 mg/kg of pentylenetetrazol (i.p.) and were video recorded for 30 min. Behaviors were scored using a modified Racine scale (0-7 0 = no seizure; 7 = respiratory arrest/death). Seizure severity was classified as mild (score = 1-3) or severe (score = 4-7). RUPP mice had reduced hippocampal and placental ASIC2a protein. ASIC2a+/- mice had reduced latency to seizures, increased seizure duration, increased severe seizure duration, and higher maximum seizure scores. Reduced hippocampal ASIC2a in RUPP mice and increased seizure activity in pregnant ASIC2a+/- mice support the hypothesis that reduced ASIC2a increases seizure sensitivity associated with the RUPP.The shortage of healthcare human resources is an important challenge for coping with the aging society in Macao. Since little attention has been paid to continuous education of healthcare assistants, this study aims to develop and evaluate a continuous education program, supporting the expansion and optimization of the competence of healthcare assistants. It is a cluster-randomized trial study. All healthcare assistants who were employed in nursing homes in Macao were eligible for this study. Six nursing homes were recruited and randomly assigned either an experimental group (3 nursing homes; 45 healthcare assistants) or a control group (3 nursing homes; 40 healthcare assistants). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ABT-263.html Healthcare assistants were assessed at baseline and after intervention with the Healthcare Assistants Care Knowledge Test and the Healthcare Assistants Care Competence Self-Assessment. The experimental group received a continuous education program with 10 themes during 2017-2018 while the control groups did not. The results of the generalized estimating equation showed that care knowledge in the experimental group was significantly different from that of the control group (Wald Chi Square = 3.
