Interaural time and level differences are important cues for sound localization. We wondered whether the broadband information contained in these two cues could fully explain the behavior of barn owls and responses of midbrain neurons in these birds. To tackle this problem, we developed a novel approach based on head-related transfer functions. These filters contain the complete information present at the eardrum. We selected positions in space characterized by equal broadband interaural time and level differences. Stimulation from such positions provides reduced information to the owl. We show that barn owls are able to discriminate between such positions. In many cases, but not all, the owls may have used spectral components of interaural level differences that exceeded the known behavioral resolution and variability for discrimination. Alternatively, the birds may have used template matching. Likewise, neurons in the optic tectum of the barn owl, a nucleus involved in sensorimotor integration, contained more information than is available in the broadband interaural time and level differences. Thus, these data show that more information is available and used by barn owls for sound localization than carried by broadband interaural time and level differences.PURPOSE Hearing performance data was collected from a large heterogeneous group of subjects implanted with the Cochlear™ Nucleus® CI532 with Slim Modiolar Electrode, for the purposes of postmarket clinical follow-up. Data was analysed for factors which may predict postoperative speech recognition scores. METHODS Data was collected retrospectively from five German clinics for 159 subjects from March 2017 to August 2018. Hearing thresholds and recognition scores for monosyllabic words in quiet and sentences in noise were measured preoperatively and at 3 and 6 months postoperatively. RESULTS There was a mean gain of 44% points (95% CI 39-49%) at 6 months in monosyllable scores in quiet for implanted ears. Preoperative hearing thresholds in implant ears increased systematically with decreasing age; however, younger subjects had better baseline monosyllable scores with hearing aids compared with older subjects. Baseline performance alone explained 14% of the variation in postoperative scores. Residual hearing was preserved on average to within 22 dB at 250 Hz and 30 dB at 500 Hz of preoperative levels. CONCLUSIONS In a large and varied cohort of routinely treated hearing-impaired adults, speech recognition with the CI532 for German monosyllabic words in quiet at 6 months was equivalent to performance reported at one year or more in other published studies. Although younger subjects had poorer preoperative pure-tone thresholds, they had better preoperative word recognition scores compared with older subjects, and also had higher post implant scores. Further research is required to identify if this phenomenon is just applicable to German health system assessment and referral practices. On ancient Earth, environmental conditions favored prebiotic chemical reactions. In the Archean, some molecules with conjugated rings might have been synthesized, displaying structural stability in the Archean in the presence of ionizing radiation and hydration-dehydration events. Additionally, it is suggested that on ancient Earth, calcite was a common mineral promoting organic compound synthesis. In the present work a study of the interaction of amino acid mixtures with the (104) surface of calcite is presented. Our preliminary results show the abiotic synthesis of alloxazine (a flavin with relevant photochemical properties). Computer simulations were performed in HyperChem 8.0.1. by means of MM+ molecular mechanics and PM3 semi-empirical methods, in 27 possible amino acid trimers of alanine, glycine and lysine. Alloxazine formation is possible by the gamma irradiation of amino acids. The computer simulations show that trimers GGG and GGA promote the further transformation from diketopiperazines (DKP's) and KGK to alloxazine. The computer simulations with free radicals are not stable when alloxazine is interacting with the calcite surface. Experiments in anoxygenic environments with hydration-dehydration events in gamma irradiated samples allow the abiotic formation of flavins, DKP's and a heterocycle compound with possible relevance in prebiotic chemistry.BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Intracorneal ring segments (ICRS) are believed to stop the progression of keratoconus (KC). This statement on progression, however, requires knowledge about measurement reproducibility. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/blebbistatin.html The purpose of this study was to compare the reproducibility of tomographic parameters in eyes with KC after femtosecond laser-assisted implantation of INTACS (fs-INTACS) using two different devices and to determine which is more reliable for the follow-up of these patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS In this study 19 KC eyes were included and repeatedly examined 5 times with the Scheimpflug topography Pentacam HR and the Casia 2 optical coherence tomography (VA-OCT) devices. Outcome measures included the reproducibility and comparability of measurements between the two devices of (1) keratometric refractive power of the anterior cornea and (2) posterior cornea, (3) maximum keratometric refractive power, (4) central corneal thickness and (5) corneal thickness at the thinnest site. RESULTS The mean differences (Pentacam minus Casia 2) of (1), (2), (3), (4) and (5) were 0.67 dpt, 0.41 dpt, 3.4 dpt, 1.5 µm and 11.8 µm, respectively. The mean SDs of the 5 repeat measurements for (1), (2), (3), (4) and (5) were 0.20 dpt/0.20 dpt, 0.10 dpt/0.07 dpt, 0.75 dpt/0.5 dpt, 6.5 µm/2.4 µm (p = 0.007) and 7.3 µm/1.9 µm (p = 0.001) for Pentacam and Casia 2, respectively. Cronbach's alpha was better than 0.98 for both devices and all parameters. CONCLUSION Both Casia 2 and Pentacam enable a reliable assessment of the corneal refractive power in KC after fs-INTACS implantation; however, the reproducibility was significantly better with Casia 2 only for the measurement of corneal thickness. The Pentacam showed significantly higher values for the mean anterior and posterior corneal refractive power and measured significantly thicker at the thinnest point of the cornea compared to Casia 2.
