Planning families is an important issue within the HIV community. The primary objective of this study was to explore the fertility desires and intentions of men living with HIV (MLWH). A cross-sectional survey containing 77 questions in 10 domains was developed, validated and administered to MLWH. The sample was stratified by sexual orientation, ethnicity, and city of residence. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine sociodemographic correlates of intention to have children. 276 men were recruited, of whom 118 (43%) identified as heterosexual and 158 (57%) as gay, bisexual, two-spirit or queer (GBTQ). 133 (45%) men wished and 120 (44%) actually intended to become a parent. Significantly more heterosexual men desired fatherhood (63% vs 37%, p  less then  .0001) and intended to have children in the future (57% vs. 34%, p  less then  .0001). Among all men, significant predictors of intention to have children were age ≤40, heterosexual orientation, African/Caribbean/Black ethnicity, living in Toronto, higher household income, and being partnered with an HIV-negative individual. When stratified by sexual orientation, younger age remained a significant correlate for both groups. As mental health specialists are scarce in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the World Health Organization (WHO) encourages task-shifting. We aimed to evaluate the barriers that could compromise task-shifting in front-line health care workers (HCWs) who provide HIV integrated care in West Africa. We collected knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) information on symptoms, causes and management of depression in PLHIV in care in four clinics in Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire (N = 168). The main barriers that could compromise task-shifting came from poor knowledge, particularly on symptoms and causes. Knowledge was more limited in HCWs other than medical doctors (good answers less then 70%). The access to a depression training was limited (32.7%) and was the main factor associated to poor knowledge on depression. Even when social distance and barriers to practice were low (70.8% and 69.6%, respectively), some barriers persisted. More than half of respondents considered that diagnosis and management needed to be performed by a specialist. To guarantee the success of task-shifting, in the perspective of integrated care, efforts are needed to improve the access to specific training on depression considering screening, management, but also perceptions and attitudes, as some barriers subsist.HIV testing among female sex workers (FSWs) is an established global health priority. HIV self-testing (HIVST) seems to have the potential to address issues of confidentiality, privacy and convenience among this key population. HIVST, however, may result in unintended consequences as its implementation unfolds in a complex sex work context characterised by unequal power relations, stigma and high HIV prevalence. We aimed to explore the experiences of FSWs with HIVST in the context of retesting and antiretroviral usage in Blantyre, Malawi. We used an ethnographic approach to understand meanings and views around HIVST and retesting. We found high levels of retesting, especially among those on antiretroviral, two of which received "false-negative" results. We identified three broad narratives (1) retesting in response to experiences in the sex work context, (2) retesting driven by the desire to self-monitor HIV-negative status, and (3) retesting in the hope of sero-reversion. The FSWs' experiences indicate that the implementation of HIVST in this context is complex with potential for unintended harms such as coercive testing. HIVST programmes must include clear and appropriate messaging to reduce retesting while on ART and implement strategies to address FSW concerns and anxieties about the accuracy of their HIV-positive test results.Desorption/ionization induced by neutral clusters (DINeC) is used as an ultrasoft desorption/ionization method for the analysis of fragile biomolecules by means of mass spectrometry (MS). As a test molecule, the glycopeptide vancomycin was measured with DINeC-MS, and resulting mass spectra were compared to the results obtained with electrospray ionization (ESI), matrix assisted laser desorption ionization, and time-of-flight secondary ion MS. Of the desorption-based techniques, DINeC spectra show the lowest abundance of fragments comparable to ESI spectra. The soft desorption nature of DINeC was further demonstrated when applied to MS analysis of teicoplanin.Because of insufficient information, a single biomarker is not sufficient for early diagnosis of cancer, whereas sensitive and selective detection of multiple biomolecules can significantly reduce analysis time, sample size, and accurately perform cell screening in early cancer. Therefore, the development of a noninvasive strategy that can simultaneously quantify multiple biomarkers (i.e., nucleic acids, proteins, and small molecules) in a single cell is particularly important. Herein, a universal sensing system (functional DNA@mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN)-Black Hole Quencher-rhodamine 6G (RhB), FDSBR), which is based on the combination of functionalized DNA and smart responsive nanomaterial, was successfully constructed. After incubation with the cells, different types of targets trigger the strand displacement reaction to release the fluorophore-labeled nucleic acids as the output signals to reflect the intracellular level of the telomerase and adenosine triphosphate (ATP), respectively. Simultaneously, intracellular miR-21 can be clearly indicated by the restored fluorescence of RhB when the caged double-stranded DNA was substituted into single-stranded DNA to open the pore. The concentrations of intracellular telomerase, miR-21, and ATP were identified successfully in three cell lines at the single-cell level. The results show that the contents of three biomolecules have significant differences in the three model cell lines and provide a promising route for developing innovative early disease diagnosis and cell screening assay.
