A biofilm is an assemblage of microbial cells attached to a surface and encapsulated in an extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix. The formation of a biofilm is one of the important mechanisms of bacterial resistance, which not only leads to hard-to-control bacterial infections in humans and animals but also enables bacteria to be a major problem in various fields, such as food processing, wastewater treatment and metalworking. Quorum sensing (QS) is a bacterial cell-to-cell communication process that depends on the bacterial population density and is mediated by small diffusible signaling molecules called autoinducers (AIs). Bacteria use QS to regulate diverse arrays of functions, including virulence and biofilm formation. Therefore, the interference with QS by using QS inhibiting agents, including QS inhibitors (QSIs) and quorum quenching (QQ) enzymes, to reduce or even completely repress the biofilm formation of pathogenic bacteria appears to be a promising approach to control bacterial infections. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms of QS-regulating biofilm formation and QS-inhibiting agents that control bacterial biofilm formation, strategies for the discovery of new QS inhibiting agents, and the current applications of QS-inhibiting agents in several fields to provide insight into the development of effective drugs to control pathogenic bacteria.This study has two objectives to validate an adapted online version of the Psychological State Test (TEP, in its Spanish acronym); and to assess differences in pre-competitive psychological state profiles between amateur and professional athletes in team sports. The TEP questionnaire is an instrument which is used to assess, in a quick and simple fashion, the psychological state of athletes prior to competing. Its psychometric properties were evaluated by means of an analysis of internal consistency, an Exploratory Factor Analysis and a Confirmatory Factor Analysis. The EFA's results showed a factorial structure consisting of two principal factors and reliability coefficients, both globally and at the factor level, which can be considered acceptable (global α = 0.81; Factor 1 α = 0.85; and Factor 2 α = 0.73). The CFA confirmed the model proposed by the EFA so that the items were distributed around these factors, giving rise to one factor which includes variables that have a positive relationship with performance, and another with variables that negatively affect performance. Meanwhile, regarding the difference between the pre-competitive psychological state of amateurs and professionals, professional athletes presented higher levels of Motivation (p = 0.5 and d = -0.23). It is concluded that the TEP is a suitable tool for the evaluation of pre-competitive psychological states. Here we have examined the in vivo effects of four pathogenetic missense mutations (two mapping to the GTPase domain and two to the 3HB domain) using two complementary approaches CRISPR/Cas9 editing to introduce such variants in the endogenous atlastin gene and transgenesis to generate lines overexpressing atlastin carrying the same pathogenic variants. We found that all pathological mutations examined reduce atlastin activity in vivo although to different degrees of severity. Moreover, overexpression of the pathogenic variants in a wild type atlastin background does not give rise to the loss of function phenotypes expected for dominant negative mutations. To investigate the role of CAB39 in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) development and examine its expression level in NPC tumor samples. Immunohistochemistry staining of NPC tissue microarray was conducted to detect the expression of CAB39 protein in NPC tissues, and the clinical significance of CAB39 was evaluated. Lentivirus-mediated over-expression of CAB39 was designed to increase CAB39 expression in CNE-1 cells. Cell colony formation, cell cycle and CCK-8 proliferation experiments were performed to compare the proliferation ability of CNE-1 cells with or without CAB39 over-expression. Western blotting was conducted to examine downstream targets of CAB39. CAB39 expression was higher in tumor samples compared to normal tissue and the higher CAB39 expression was positively correlated to higher TNM stage and distant metastasis rate and non-keratinized state. We extracted data from all demographic and health surveys conducted since 2010 on the type of facilities used for obtaining contraceptives, routine antenatal care and care for minor childhood diarrhoea and cough or fever. Using mixed-effects logistic regression models we assessed associations between hospital use and individual and country-level covariates. We assessed competence of care based on the receipt of essential clinical actions during visits. We also analysed three indicators of user experience from countries with available service provision assessment survey data.
