Oriented sample solid-state NMR is a complementary approach to protein structure determination with the distinct advantage that it can be applied to supramolecular assemblies, such as viruses and membrane proteins, under near-native conditions, which generally include high levels of hydration as found in living systems. Thus, in order to perform 1H detected versions of multi-dimensional experiments water suppression techniques must be integrated into the pulse sequences. For example, 1H-windowed detection of 1H-15N dipolar couplings enable multi-dimensional NMR experiments to be performed. Here we show that the addition of a solvent suppression pulse during the z-filter interval greatly improves the sensitivity of the experiments by suppressing the 1H signals from water present. This is demonstrated here with a crystal sample submerged in water and then extended to proteins. The combination of solvent-suppressed 1H detected PISEMO and the use of a strip shield-solenoid coil probe configuration provides a two-fold sensitivity enhancement in both the crystal sample and Pf1 coat protein sample compared to the 15N direct detection method. Here we also examine protein NMR line-widths and sensitivity enhancements in the context of window detected separated local field experiments for protein samples.People in need of mental health treatment do not access care at high rates or in a timely manner, inclusive of Veterans at Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA) medical centers. Barriers to care have been identified, and one potential solution is the use of technology-based interventions within primary care. This study evaluated the Cognitive Anxiety Sensitivity Treatment (CAST), a previously developed computerized treatment that has shown efficacy in community samples for mental health symptoms including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, and suicidal ideation. VA primary care patients with elevated anxiety sensitivity (N = 25) were recruited to participate in a mixed-method open pilot to examine acceptability, usability, and preliminary effectiveness in a VA primary care setting. There is no cure for this disease, and most of the current treatments are palliative. In this study, we aimed to analyze the application of electroencephalographic (EEG) biofeedback therapy, an adjunctive treatment used for many psychiatric disorders, in the rehabilitation of schizophrenic patients. Schizophrenic patients were selected as the experimental subjects, and the initial diagnosis criteria were set accordingly. A primary and a secondary efficacy index was then developed for the evaluation of EEG biofeedback therapy rather than traditional drug treatment. Lastly, the effects of the two methods were compared. The findings indicate that traditional drugs could be used in the treatment of mild schizophrenia, but showed poor results for severe and moderate schizophrenia. EEG biofeedback therapy was effective for the treatment of various degrees of schizophrenia and improved patients' sleep quality and anxiety. These findings have significant practical implications for the rehabilitation of schizophrenic patients and patients with chronic diseases in general.The 2019 outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has had a devastating impact. Given the on-going nature of the outbreak, the deleterious toll on mental health, including substance use, is unknown. Negative reinforcement models of substance use posit that elevations in stress from the COVID-19 pandemic will elicit a corresponding motivation to downregulate COVID-19-related stress reactivity via substance use for a subset of the population. The current study sought to evaluate (1) if COVID-19-related worry and fear were associated with substance use coping motives; and (2) how levels of COVID-19-related worry and fear differ between pre-COVID-19 substance users, COVID-19 substance initiators, and abstainers. Participants were 160 adults recruited nationally between April-May 2020 for an online study. Results indicated that COVID-19-related worry was associated with substance use coping motives. Additionally, compared to abstainers, pre-COVID-19 substance users and COVID-19 substance initiators demonstrated the highest levels of worry and fear. Examination of differences suggested that the COVID-19 substance initiators had the highest COVID-19-related worry and fear for all substances except for opioids, with effect size estimates ranging from small to medium. The results of this study suggest that COVID-19-specific psychological factors appear to be involved in substance use behavior.Wild birds may be considered a possible source of parasitic mesostigmatid mites for poultry, but only few studies explored this hypothesis. In addition, there is very little information about the parasitic mites present in commercial poultry systems from southern South America. To contribute with data on parasitic mesostigmatid mites at the domestic-wildlife interface, we conducted a study in which samples were systematically collected from laying hens and wild birds (adults and nestlings), for two years at three commercial laying hen farms. The occurrence of mesostigmatid mites were compared among hosts. A proportion of the collected mites were morphologically identified to the species level, finding that host preference varied greatly depending on mite species laying hens were only parasitized by Ornithonyssus sylviarum, wild bird nestlings were mostly parasitized by Ornithonyssus bursa, and in small proportion, by O. sylviarum, while adult passerines were parasitized by both Ornithonyssus species, and sporadically by Pellonyssus cf.
