In the original publication of the article, the authorship was published incorrectly.BACKGROUND Experimental and clinical studies indicate that neuronal death with the presence of high levels of reactive oxygen species are present in depressed patients and antidepressants might display neuroprotective effects against them. However, the mechanisms underlying antidepressant neuroprotection are not completely understood. In our previous study, we showed that mirtazapine modulated the expression of pro- and anti-apoptotic proteins in mouse brain structures, but there are no data in human cells. Thus, this work was designed to study the possible neuroprotective properties of mirtazapine and imipramine, two commercially available antidepressants with different primary mechanisms of action, in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells against an oxidative insult. METHODS SH-SY5Y cells were preincubated with mirtazapine and imipramine (1-20 μM) for 24 h, then hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was added into the medium containing the antidepressants for additional 24 h, and MTT assay was carried out subsequently. Also, to elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying the neuroprotective properties of antidepressants, we investigated the effects of mirtazapine and imipramine (2 μM) in pro- and anti-apoptotic proteins gene expression in SH-SY5Y cells. RESULTS Mirtazapine (1 and 2 μM) and imipramine (1and 2 μM) protected against hydrogen peroxide-induced cellular viability impairment. Most importantly, both compounds reduced p53 mRNA expression, but only imipramine enhanced the Bcl-2/Bax ratio. CONCLUSIONS The obtained data indicate that mirtazapine and imipramine have neuroprotective effects against H2O2-induced cell death. Although both antidepressants reduced Bax and p53 mRNA expression, only the protection mediated by imipramine might be due to its ability to enhance Bcl-2/Bax ratio.PURPOSE OF REVIEW Food insecurity is the lack of sufficient food in quantity and/or quality. Psychological distress includes mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. This review provides current information on research examining the association between food insecurity and psychological distress. RECENT FINDINGS Among studies published in the previous 5 years, food insecurity was significantly and positively associated with multiple indicators of psychological distress. This included cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, as well as primary data collection and secondary data analyses, from countries of varying income levels. Articles also provided evidence within various populations, such as adults of all ages, college students, those living with chronic disease, and parents. Food insecurity and psychological distress are interconnected health issues. Future research should consider a number of important gaps in the literature, with the most important being the development of interventions to improve food insecurity and psychological health concurrently.BACKGROUND Optimising techniques to wean patients from invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) remains a key goal of intensive care practice. The use of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) as a weaning strategy (transitioning patients who are difficult to wean to early NIV) may reduce mortality, ventilator-associated pneumonia and intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay. OBJECTIVES Our objectives were to determine the cost effectiveness of protocolised weaning, including early extubation onto NIV, compared with weaning without NIV in a UK National Health Service setting. METHODS We conducted an economic evaluation alongside a multicentre randomised controlled trial. Patients were randomised to either protocol-directed weaning from mechanical ventilation or ongoing IMV with daily spontaneous breathing trials. The primary efficacy outcome was time to liberation from ventilation. Bivariate regression of costs and quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) provided estimates of the incremental cost per QALY and incremental net monetary benefit (INMB) overall and for subgroups [presence/absence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and operative status]. Long-term cost effectiveness was determined through extrapolation of survival curves using flexible parametric modelling. RESULTS NIV was associated with a mean INMB of £620 ($US885) (cost-effectiveness threshold of £20,000 per QALY) with a corresponding probability of 58% that NIV is cost effective. The probability that NIV is cost effective was higher for those with COPD (84%). NIV was cost effective over 5 years, with an estimated incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of £4618 ($US6594 per QALY gained). METHODS Three cases of young athletic patients with similar clinical presentations are reported. All received US examination of the hip with attention to the labrum that included a novel long-axis hip traction technique which assisted in diagnosing ALT. RESULTS In the first and second cases, MRA and orthopedic consult were obtained for confirmation of the diagnosis. Arthroscopy was performed to correct the ALT. The third patient declined an MRA. Conservative management consisted of McKenzie method active care, resulting in return to sport in the third case. CONCLUSION These three cases demonstrate the clinical and sonographic presentation of ALT. Noninvasive metabolic imaging represents a new hope in delineating cellular, nigh molecular level energy exchange to guide targeted management in a diverse array of neuropathology.
