We found correlations between measures of driving speed on a complex research simulator scenario and racing simulator lap time and maximum tires off track. Given that atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease promoted by specific cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, we aimed at evaluating whether sex could affect the levels of these proatherogenic cytokines in a group of healthy adults. In this analysis, we also included other cytokines and peptides that have been implicated in atherosclerosis development and progression. They were all associated with testosterone and the testosterone/estradiol ratio. They remained significantly associated with sex (but not with hormones) after being tested for potential confounders. Nevertheless, this association is only partly explained by hormone levels.Aim To analyze a single-centre experience in feminizing genitoplasty in virilized girls with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). Methods Review of medical records of all 46, XX CAH patients undergoing single stage feminizing genitoplasty between 2003 and 2018 was performed. Results A total of 31 girls aged from 4 months to 10 years were included in the study. The majority (n = 26/31, 84%) were operated before 2 years of age (median 8 months). External virilization was rated as Prader 3 (n = 7/31), Prader 4 (n = 21/31) and Prader 5 (n = 3/31). The urethrovaginal confluence location was low in 19 and high in 12 girls with a percentage distribution similar in Prader 4 and 5 (p > 0.05) but significantly different in Prader 3 (p = 0.017). The follow-up ranged from 12 months to 15 years. All parents assessed the cosmetic result as satisfactory. Perioperative complications occurred in two patients and included rectal injury (n = 1/31) and prolonged bleeding (n = 1/31). Three patients developed late complications including labial atheromas (n = 2/31) and vaginal stricture requiring surgical dilatation (n = 1/31). Low confluence did not decrease the risk of complications. Conclusions Early feminizing genitoplasty in girls with congenital adrenal hyperplasia, irrespective of virilization severity, gives satisfactory cosmetic results and is characterized by low and acceptable surgical risk. Most of them are not antigenically related to current circulating viruses. Viruses similar to recent strains are required for screening modern antiviral compounds and studying new vaccine candidates against novel influenza viruses. The process by which an influenza virus adapts to a new host is rather difficult. The aim of this study was to select a non-adapted current virus whose major biological properties correspond to those of classical lab-adapted viruses. Mice were inoculated intranasally with non-lung-adapted influenza viruses of subtype H1N1pdm09. They were monitored closely for body weight loss, mortality outcomes and gross pathology for 14 days following inoculation, as well as viral replication in lung tissue. Lung-adapted PR8 virus was used as a control. The tested viruses multiplied equally well in the lower respiratory tract of mice without prior adaptation but dramatically differed in lethality; the differences in their toxicity and pathogenicity in mice were established. A/South Africa/3626/2013 (H1N1)pdm09 virus was found to be an appropriate candidate to replace PR8 as a model virus for influenza research. No prior adaptation to the animal model is needed to reach the pathogenicity level of the classical mouse-adapted PR8 virus.Background Evaluate equilibrium contrast-enhanced CT (EQ-CT) texture analysis (EQ-CTTA) against histologically-quantified fibrosis, serum-based enhanced liver fibrosis panel (ELF) and imaging-based extracellular volume fraction (ECV) in chronic hepatitis. Methods This study was a re-analysis of image data from a previous prospective study. Pre- and equilibrium-phase post-IV contrast CT datasets were collected from patients with chronic hepatitis with contemporaneous liver biopsy and serum ELF measurement between April 2011 and July 2013. Biopsy samples were analysed to derive collagen proportionate area (CPA). EQ-CTTA was performed with a filtration histogram technique using texture analysis software, with texture quantification using statistical and histogram-based metrics (mean, skewness, standard deviation, entropy, etc.). Association between pre-contrast and EQ-CTTA against CPA, ECV and ELF was evaluated using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (rs). Results Complete datasets collected in 29 patients (16 male; 13 female), mean age (range) 49 (22-66 years). Liver ECV, CPA and ELF had a median (interquartile range) of 0.26 (0.24-0.29); 5.0 (3.0-13.7) and 9.71 (8.39-10.92). Difference in segment VII hepatic CTTA (medium texture scale) between EQ-CT and pre-contrast images was significantly and positively associated with ELF score (mean rs = 0.69, p less then 0.001; skewness rs = 0.57, p = 0.007). Significant negative associations were observed between pre-contrast and EQ-CT whole hepatic CTTA (coarse texture scale) with CPA (pre-contrast, SD rs = -0.66, p less then 0.001) and ECV (EQ-CT, entropy rs = -0.58, p = 0.006). Conclusions Hepatic EQ-CTTA demonstrates significant association with validated markers of liver fibrosis, suggesting a role in non-invasive quantification of severity in diffuse fibrosis.
