The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, along with implementation of lockdown and strict public movement restrictions, in Greece has affected hospital visits and admissions. We aimed to investigate trends of cardiac disease admissions during the outbreak of the pandemic and possible associations with the applied restrictive measures. This is a retrospective observational study. Data for 4970 patients admitted via the cardiology emergency department (ED) across 3 large-volume urban hospitals in Athens and 2 regional/rural hospitals from February 3, 2020, up to April 12 were recorded. Data from the equivalent (for the COVID-19 outbreak) time period of 2019 and from the postlockdown time period were also collected. A falling trend of cardiology ED visits and hospital admissions was observed starting from the week when the restrictive measures due to COVID-19 were implemented. Compared with the pre-COVID-19 outbreak time period, acute coronary syndrome (ACS) [145 (29/week) vs. 60 (12/week),-59%, P<0.001], ST elevation myocardial infarction [46 (9.2/week) vs. 21 (4.2/week),-54%, P=0.002], and non-ST elevation ACS [99 cases (19.8/week) vs. 39 (7.8/week),-60% P<0.001] were reduced at the COVID-19 outbreak time period. Reductions were also noted for heart failure worsening and arrhythmias. The ED visits in the postlockdown period were significantly higher than in the COVID-19 outbreak time period (1511 vs 660; P<0.05). Our data show significant drops in cardiology visits and admissions during the COVID-19 outbreak time period. Whether this results from restrictive measures or depicts a true reduction of cardiac disease cases warrants further investigation. The proportion of TB cases within clusters and the associated risk factors are important epidemiological parameters guiding appropriate outbreak control strategies in endemic settings. We conducted a hospital-based TB case-cohort study between 2003 and 2011 in the northernmost province of Thailand. We identified TB clusters by Mycobacterium tuberculosis WGS and analysed the risks of TB clustering and the characteristics of large clusters compared with small clusters. Among 1146 TB isolates, we identified 77 clusters with 251 isolates defined by a 5-single-nucleotide variant (SNV) cutoff and 112 clusters with 431 isolates defined by a 12-SNV cutoff. Twelve large clusters with 6 isolates or more in each cluster were identified by a 12-SNV cutoff. Sublineage 2.2.1 (both Ancestral and Modern) strains and imprisonment were independently associated with large clusters. Nevertheless, little is known about human exposure to these pesticides in various countries. In this study, concentrations of 14 neonics and six dialkylphosphate metabolites (DAPs) were determined simultaneously in 566 urine samples collected from nine countries during 2010-2014. The highest sum concentration of 14 neonics was found in urine from Vietnam (median 12.2 ng/mL) whereas that of six DAPs was from China (18.4 ng/mL). The median concentrations of ∑6 DAPs were twice higher than those of ∑14 neonics across the nine countries, which suggested a greater exposure to OPs than neonics. The overall pattern of urinary pesticide concentrations was similar among the nine countries with dimethylphosphate (DMP) and dimethylthiophosphate (DMTP) accounting for 51-89% of the total pesticide concentrations. Differences in urinary pesticide concentrations between genders (female and male), age groups (≤20, 21-49, and ≥50 years), and regions (cities of Shanghai, Guangzhou and Qiqihar) were examined. Total daily exposure doses to OPs were highest in China (515 μg/day) with 15% of the samples exceeding the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's reference dose for chlorpyrifos (18 μg/day). This is the first study to establish baseline levels of OP and neonics exposure in general populations across nine countries.The last two decades have seen a rise in the development of lanthanum (III)-containing materials (LM) for controlling phosphate in the aquatic environment. >70 papers have been published on this topic in the peer-reviewed literature, but mechanisms of phosphate removal by LM as well as potential environmental impacts of LM remain unclear. In this review, we summarize peer-reviewed scientific articles on the development and use of 80 different types of LM in terms of prospective benefits, potential ecological impacts, and research needs. We find that the main benefits of LM for phosphate removal are their ability to strongly bind phosphate under diverse environmental conditions (e.g., over a wide pH range, in the presence of diverse aqueous constituents). The maximum phosphate uptake capacity of LM correlates primarily with the La content of LM, whereas reaction kinetics are influenced by LM formulation and ambient environmental conditions (e.g., pH, presence of co-existing ions, ligands, organic matter).
