The fish exhibited the highest level of plasma cortisol as well as the lowest levels of triiodothyronine and thyroxine in the HSD group. The fish stocked in the LSD group showed the highest activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase as well as the highest content of glutathione in liver. The significant highest total antioxidant capacity occurred in the fish stocked in the LSD group. The results showed that HSD resulted in chronic crowding stress, and exerted negative impact on growth performance, muscle quality, and antioxidative capacity of gibel carp.Paralichthys olivaceus is the kind of cold-water benthic marine fish. In the early stages of development, the symmetrical juveniles transform into an asymmetrical body shape through metamorphosis for adapting benthic life. After that, one side of the fish body is attached to the ground, and the eyes turn to the opposite side which is called ocular side. The body color also appears asymmetry. The skin on the ocular side is dark brown, and the skin on the blind side is white without pigmentation. Pseudo-albinism and hypermelanosis have been considered distinct body color disorders in flatfish. Pseudo-albinism and hypermelanosis in Paralichthys olivaceus are due to abnormal or uneven pigment distribution, due to the interaction of hereditary and environmental factors, rather than a single-nucleotide mutation of a specific gene. Here, we report three single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) responsible for both pseudo-albinism and hypermelanosis, which are located on two body color-related genes involved in melanogs of body color is positively correlated with pigmentation, suggesting that the influence of abnormal expression of two genes on the pigmentation in abnormal parts of body color deserves further study.Teleost is a widely diverse group of fishes and so do their feeding habits. From aquaculture points of view, there have been un-interrupted efforts to optimize feeding rates with protein as the chief ingredients in the supplementary diet. However, knowledge on its protein absorption is incomplete so far, to acquire absolute feeding design to mobilize enhanced production of animal-source protein as fish biomass. In this review, the variable protein absorption across digestive tract (DT) in this group of fish has been highlighted. Emphasis is given to outline how DT components, like enterocyte specific absorptive mechanisms, are different in anterior and posterior regions of DT or from the absorptive transporter system. The existence of a transporter-based absorption mechanism brings more variability in the protein absorption in teleosts. At least two such transport systems (Na+-dependent and Na+-independent) with within-system differences impart more variability to protein absorption. Further, shifting from one stage to another stage of development involves considerable modification of the protein absorptive mechanism in teleosts. Gut microbes may also indirectly facilitate protein absorption in teleosts. Overall, the present review projects a comprehensive understanding of the protein absorption in teleosts that will help to strategize the modulation of feeding technology in fish culture.Biological organisms are constantly challenged by xenobiotics and have evolved mechanisms to reduce, neutralize, or repair toxic outcomes. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Gefitinib.html The various chemical defenses all utilize energy, but their specific costs and impacts on energy budgets are currently unknown. In this study, the energetic costs associated with the induction and substrate transport of the efflux transporter P-glycoprotein (P-gp [ABCB1, MDR1]) were examined in rainbow trout. An intraperitoneal injection of the P-gp inducer clotrimazole (0, 0.1, 1.0, and 10 mg/kg) increased P-gp activity (as measured by a competitive rhodamine 123 transport assay in hepatocytes) in a dose-dependent manner reaching a maximum induction of 2.8-fold. Maximum P-gp induction occurred at 50 h post-administration with the highest dose; significant induction of P-gp activity remained elevated over constitutive values until the last sampling time point (168 h). In vitro measurements of hepatocyte respiration indicated that basal P-gp activity transporting R123 as a substrate did not significantly increase respiration rates (range 18.0 to 23.2 ng O2/min/106 cells); however, following the induction of P-gp by clotrimazole and exposure to the P-gp substrate R123, respiration rates increased significantly (3.52-fold) over baseline values. Using whole animal respirometry, it was shown that respiration rates in fish exposed to R123 only or induced with clotrimazole were not different from controls (range 1.2 to 2.1 mg O2/kg/min); however, respiration rates were significantly increased in fish with induced P-gp levels and also exposed to R123. This work indicates that basal and induced levels of P-gp activity do not incur significant energetic costs to fish; however, upon induction of P-gp and concomitant substrate exposures, energetic costs can increase and could pose challenges to organisms facing limited energy resources.Studying biology of sperm provides valuable information to optimize artificial reproduction and is crucial for sustainable aquaculture. Here, we investigated morphology of spermatozoon in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, spermatozoa motility kinetics at different osmolalities were studied using computer-assisted sperm analysis software. The spermatozoon lacked an acrosome and consisted of a head, midpiece, and flagellum. The head of spermatozoa was round, oval, and rather elongated in shape, showing high variations in dimensions. There were up to 6 mitochondria that encircled the proximal part of the flagellum. The proximal and distal centrioles were located within the nuclear notch and arranged orthogonal to each other. The axoneme had a typical 9 + 2 microtubule structure. The flagellar length of spermatozoon was 66.94 ± 0.46 μm. Spermatozoa were immotile in the seminal plasma. Dilution of sperm with natural seawater (1100 mOsmol/kg) resulted in initiation of motility for 91.
