Research has shown ample evidence for reciprocity between depression and disability. We examined whether decreases in disability among low-income, homebound older adults who received brief depression treatments were mediated by improvement in depressive symptoms and vice versa and whether the mediation effects varied by treatment modality. In a 3-arm randomized clinical trial, 277 low-income homebound individuals aged 50+ participated in behavioral activation tele-delivered by bachelor's-level lay counselors (Tele-BA), problem-solving therapy tele-delivered by licensed clinicians (Tele-PST), or telephone support calls (attention control). Outcomes for exercise and CST included the Five Times Sit to Stand (FTSS) and Timed Up and Go (TUG) tests, Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD), Saint Louis University Mental Status Examination (SLUMS), and Quality of Life in Alzheimer's Disease (QoL-AD) measures. The RGA was administered to 1,326 individuals of which 36.5% were frail, 42.1% were sarcopenic, 26.1% were at risk for anorexia, and 20.8% had dementia. Widespread accumulation of misfolded α-synuclein aggregates is a key feature of Parkinson's disease (PD). Although the pattern and extent of α-synuclein accumulation through PD brains is known, the impact of chronic dopamine-replacement therapy (the gold-standard pharmacological treatment of PD) on the fate of α-synuclein is still unknown. Here, we investigated the distribution and accumulation of α-synuclein in the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) non-human primate model of PD and determined the effect of chronic L-DOPA treatment on MPTP-induced α-synuclein pathology. We measured the density of α-synuclein and tau immuno-positive neurons in the substantia nigra, putamen, hippocampal CA1 region, temporal cortex and dentate nucleus of control, MPTP and MPTP+L-DOPA-treated monkeys. The attention towards these compounds derives above all from the large number of studies demonstrating their beneficial effect on health, in fact olive leaves have been widely used in folk medicine in the Mediterranean regions. Moreover, the growing demand from consumers to replace the synthetic antioxidants, led researchers to conduct studies on the addition of plant bioactives in foods to improve their shelf-life and/or to obtain functional products. The current study overviews the findings on the addition of polyphenol-rich olive leaf extract (OLE) to foods. In particular, the effect of OLE addition on the antioxidant, microbiological and nutritional properties of different foods is examined. Most studies have highlighted the antioxidant effect of OLE in different food matrices, such as oils, meat, baked goods, vegetables, and dairy products. Furthermore, the antimicrobial activity of OLE has been observed in meat and vegetable foods, highlighting the potential of OLE as a replacer of synthetic preservatives. Finally, several authors studied the effect of OLE addition with the aim of improving the nutritional properties of vegetable products, tea, milk, meat and biscuits.
