The acute changes of running biomechanics in habitually shod children when running barefoot have been demonstrated. However, the long-term effects of barefoot running on sprinting biomechanics in children is not well understood. How does four years of participation in a daily school barefoot running program influence sprint biomechanics and stretch-shortening cycle jump ability in children? One hundred and one children from barefoot education school (age, 11.2 ± 0.7 years-old) and 93 children from a control school (age, 11.1 ± 0.7 years-old) performed 50 m maximal shod and barefoot sprints and counter movement jump and five repeated-rebound jumping. To analyse sprint kinematics, a high-speed camera (240 fps) was used. In addition, foot strike patterns were evaluated by using three high-speed cameras (300 fps). Jump heights for both jump types and the contact times for the rebound jump were measured using a contact mat system. The principal objective of this work was to assess how well the written protocols of maternity units used for the prevention and management of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) corresponded to the 2004 French guidelines on this topic. The second objective was to assess whether or not this correspondence with the national guidelines varied according to hospital level (basic, specialized, and subspecialized) and status (teaching, public, and private). This observational multicenter cross-sectional study took place in September 2010 and included French perinatal networks that volunteered to participate. We asked 300 French maternity units belonging to these networks to participate by emailing a copy of their department's protocol for PPH to the study team. This team designed and performed a clinical audit of these protocols, defining 16 criteria that incorporated the 2004 French guidelines for prevention and management of PPH. The main outcome measure was the percentage of units reporting protocols meeting these criteria. Of the 244 maternity units responding, 97.1 % had a written protocol but only 67.0 % had a local protocol. The study aimed to quantify the spatiotemporal contrast sensitivity function (CSF) of healthy adult Brown-Norway rats under scotopic and photopic illumination. Animals were trained to jump onto the one of two adjacent platforms behind which was displayed a sinewave grating pattern. Contrast thresholds of light- and dark-adapted rats were determined using a staircase method of adjustment for gratings that varied in spatial frequency (sf) and temporal frequency (tf) and ranged several log-units in mean luminance. Photopic CSFs showed strong bandpass spatial tuning, consistent with prior measurements, and weak bandpass temporal tuning. CSFs were parameterized by a truncated log-parabola model, yielding a peak contrast sensitivity of 52 ± 9, peak sf of 0.17 ± 0.05 cycles/degree, sf limit of 1.6 ± 0.3 cycles/degree, low sf attenuation of 85 ± 9%, peak tf of 1.7 ± 1.1 Hz, extrapolated tf limit of 166 ± 44 Hz, and low tf attenuation of 55 ± 12%. CSFs became more lowpass and decreased systematically in contrast sensitivity and spatiotemporal acuity as mean luminance was reduced. CSFs were also measured via the visual head-tracking reflex. Its mutagenic activity depends on sequential activation by various CYP and sulfotransferase (SULT) enzymes. Previously we have observed induction of micronuclei and mitotic arrest by 1-MP in a Chinese hamster (V79)-derived cell line expressing both human CYP1A2 and SULT1A1 (V79-hCYP1A2-hSULT1A1), however, the mode of chromosome damage and the involvement of mitotic tubulin structures have not been clarified. In this study, we used immunofluorescent staining of centromere protein B (CENP-B) with the formed micronuclei, and that of β- and γ-tubulin reflecting the structures of mitotic spindle and centrioles, respectively, in V79-hCYP1A2-hSULT1A1 cells. The results indicated that 1-MP induced micronuclei in V79-hCYP1A2-hSULT1A1 cells from 0.125 to 2 μM under a 24 h/0 h (exposure/recovery) regime, while in the parental V79-Mz cells micronuclei were induced by 1-MP only at concentrations ≥ 8 μM; in both cases, the micronuclei induced by 1-MP were predominantly CENP-B positive.
