Underappreciation of auditory deficits can misdirect proper diagnosis by the treating dermatologist. This review reviews the anatomic, developmental, and embryologic aspects that characterize the ear and summarizes genodermatoses that have aberrant auditory findings. The latter are classified into neural crest, metabolic, pigmentary, craniofacial, and a miscellaneous category of disorders lacking specific cutaneous findings. The algorithms provided in this review enable treating dermatologists to better recognize and manage genodermatoses with ear involvement. Many women affected by hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) are of childbearing age. To date, the literature is limited on pregnancy-related outcomes for women with HS. To investigate maternal and obstetric outcomes and treatment utilization among women with HS. This retrospective analysis used the IBM MarketScanCommercial Claims Database. Pregnant women with HS (n=998) and 51 age-matched pregnant women without HS (n=5065) were identified and information on claims related to diagnoses, procedures, and medications were analyzed. Compared to women without HS, pregnant women with HS had significantly lower odds of having a live birth (odds ratio [OR], 0.45; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.39-0.51) and significantly higher odds of having elective terminations (OR, 2.51; 95% CI, 2.13-2.96), gestational hypertension (OR, 1.44; 95% CI, 1.12-1.84), and cesarean deliveries (OR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.06-1.55), and of receiving HS designated treatment during pregnancy (OR, 4.41; 95% CI, 3.56-5.46). To evaluate the ability of additional central testing locations to improve detection of macular visual field (VF) defects in glaucoma. Prospective cross-sectional study. Four hundred forty healthy people and 499 patients with glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON) were tested with a fundus tracked perimeter (CMP; CenterVue) using a 24-2 grid with 12 additional macular locations (24-2+). Glaucomatous optic neuropathy was identified based on expert evaluation of optic nerve head photographs and OCT scans, independently of the VF. We defined macular defects as locations with measurements outside the 5% and 2% normative limits on total deviation (TD) and pattern deviation (PD) maps within the VF central 10°. Classification was based on the total number of affected macular locations (overall detection) or the largest number of affected macular locations connected in a contiguous cluster (cluster detection). Criteria based on the number of locations and cluster size were used to obtain equivalent specificity b98% of defects missed by the 24-2 grid had at least 1 location with sensitivity of < 20 dB. On the other hand, sericin (Ser) possesses potent antioxidant and neuroprotective effects. We investigated the effect of different doses of Ser on the SD-induced cognitive impairment. Ser (100, 200, and 300 mg/kg) was administered to animals via oral gavage for 8 days, 5 days before to SD, and during SD. SD was induced in mice using a modified multiple platform model, starting on the 6th day for 72 h. Spatial learning and memory were assessed using the Lashley III maze. Serum corticosterone level, and hippocampal malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzymes were evaluated. The expression of growth-associated protein 43 (GAP-43), post-synaptic density-95 (PSD-95), synapsin 1 (SYN-1), and synaptophysin (SYP), and inflammation markers were detected by western blotting. SD caused cognitive impairment, while Ser pretreatment prevented such an effect. Serum corticosterone also increased with SD, but its levels were suppressed in SD mice receiving Ser. Furthermore, Ser normalized SD-induced reduction in the hippocampus activity of SOD and GPx, increased TAC, and decreased MDA levels. Besides, Ser pretreatment increased GAP-34, SYP, SYN-I, and PSD-95 and reduced IL1-β and TNF-α in the hippocampus. SD induced memory impairment and pretreatment with Ser improved memory via its antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and up-regulation of synaptic proteins in the hippocampus. We conducted a survey to identify the needs of radiation oncology residents for developing skills in teaching.
