V.In the present work, we report a novel chemical approach for the synthesis of orange-red emitting copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) using L-methionine as stabilizing agent at room temperature for the first time. The synthetic route is facile, economical and viable. The methionine stabilized copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs/Met) were thoroughly characterized by TEM, FT-IR, XPS, UV-Vis, steady state and transient fluorescence spectroscopy. The results show the synthesized Cu NCs/Met with a fluorescence quantum yield of 4.37% possessed high stability and excellent optical features such as large Stokes shift and long fluorescence lifetime (8.3 μs). Significantly, the fluorescence intensity of Cu NCs/Met could be efficiently quenched by norfloxacin (NOR) pharmaceutical. A fast and cost-effective NOR sensor was proposed employing Cu NCs/Met as the fluorescent nanoprobe, and the quenching mechanisms were attributed to inner filter effect and agglomeration-induced quenching. The developed sensor exhibited a high sensitivity and selectivity towards NOR in a wide linear range from 0.05 to 250 μM with a detection limit as low as 17 nM. Moreover, the practicability of the developed NOR sensor for real sample assay was validated with satisfactory recoveries, indicating this sensing platform with great potential for label-free pharmaceutical detection in complex systems. INTRODUCTION Since the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic, it is known that the severe course of the disease occurs mostly among the elderly, whereas it is rare among children and young adults. Comorbidities, in particular, diabetes and hypertension, clearly associated with age, besides obesity and smoke, are strongly associated with the need for intensive treatment and a dismal outcome. A weaker immunity of the elderly has been proposed as a possible explanation of this uneven age distribution. Thus, there is concern that children treated for cancer may allso be at risk for an unfavourable course of infection. Along the same line, anecdotal information from Wuhan, China, mentioned a severe course of COVID-19 in a child treated for leukaemia. AIM AND METHODS We made a flash survey on COVID-19 incidence and severity among children on anticancer treatment. Respondents were asked by email to fill in a short Web-based survey. RESULTS We received reports from 25 countries, where approximately 10,000 patients at risk are followed up. At the time of the survey, more than 200 of these children were tested, nine of whom were positive for COVID-19. Eight of the nine cases had asymptomatic to mild disease, and one was just diagnosed with COVID-19. We also discuss preventive measures that are in place or should be taken and treatment options in immunocompromised children with COVID-19. CONCLUSION Thus, even children receiving anticancer chemotherapy may have a mild or asymptomatic course of COVID-19. While we should not underestimate the risk of developing a more severe course of COVID-19 than that observed here, the intensity of preventive measures should not cause delays or obstructions in oncological treatment. The tumor microenvironment is a critical factor that enhances cancer progression, drug resistance, and failure of therapeutic approaches. Several cellular and non-cellular factors are involved in cancer promotion. Among the several cell populations in the tumor microenvironment, macrophages, as one of the most abundant innate immune cells within the tumor milieu, have attracted extensive attention among several researchers because of their critical role in innate pathophysiology of multiple disorders, as well as ovarian cancer. High plasticity and consequent high ability to adapt to environmental alternations by adjusting their cellular metabolism and immunological phenotype is the notable characteristic of macrophages. Therefore, the critical function of tumor-associated macrophages in ovarian cancer is highlighted in the growing body of recent studies. In this article, we will comprehensively focus on significant impacts of the macrophages on ovarian cancer progression, by discussing the role of macrophages as one of the fundamental immune cells present in tumor milieu, in metabolic reprogramming of transformed cells, and involvement of these cells in the ovarian cancer initiation, progression, invasion, and angiogenesis. Moreover, we will summarise recent studies evaluating the effects of targeting macrophages in ovarian cancer. V.This project uses quasi-random assignment of SNAP receipt dates linked to Medicaid healthcare records to examine whether ER use is affected by the timing of benefits. We find an increase in ER usage at the end of the benefit month, but only among older recipients. The estimated effect is much larger when the end of the benefit cycle coincides with the end of the calendar month, which is when other transfer payments are also depleted. This suggests that within this older group, increased food insecurity leads to increased ER utilization. Further, we find that the share of ER visitors that received SNAP benefits on the day of their ER visit is 3.1% lower than in the SNAP population. This is consistent with benefit receipt altering household behaviors and routines (notably, we observe, by increasing shopping), which may crowd out healthcare utilization. This particular effect is present across all age groups, although the magnitude is smallest for children.
