Spinal metastases typically occur in the vertebral body, and due to direct posterior extension or retropulsed pathological fractures, they often present with signs and symptoms of epidural spinal cord compression. This scenario requires surgical management to relieve compression and stabilize the spine. Separation surgery establishes a corridor to the ventral epidural space via pediculectomy, which allows for circumferential decompression and creation of a tumor-free margin around the thecal sac. Separation surgery is an increasingly popular method for the management of spinal metastases, particularly due to potentially reduced morbidity versus en bloc tumor resection, and its proven effectiveness when combined with spinal radiosurgery. Thus, separation surgery should be considered in patients with high-grade metastatic ventral epidural spinal cord compression. In this video, we present the case of a 61-year-old woman with metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma found to have severe spinal cord compression due to pathological vertebral body fractures at T10-T12, and ventral epidural disease at T10 and T12. The patient received T8-L2 posterior instrumented fusion and T10 and T12 separation surgery, with intraoperative cement embolization. We demonstrate the operative steps required to complete this procedure (Video 1). We aimed to assess the survival experience and determining factors in adult inpatients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19. We conducted a nationwide and retrospective cohort study. Data from 66,123 individuals were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method, and a multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression model was fitted. The 7-day survival was 72.2% and went to 47.6%, 35.0%, and 23.9% on days 15, 21, and 30 of hospital stay, respectively. In the multiple analysis, factors associated with an increased risk of dying were male gender, age, pneumonia at hospital admission, immunosuppression, and personal history of chronic non-communicable diseases. Reduced risk of a fatal outcome was observed among patients with asthma history. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest study analyzing the survival probability in a large subset of Latin-American adults with COVID-19, in whom the disease burden has been high. In this study, a Phanerochaete chrysosporium fungal-luffa fiber system was found to efficiently biodegrade two sulfonamides, sulfadimethoxine (SDM) and sulfadizine (SDZ), in cow urine wastewater. Biodegradation pathways were proposed on the basis of key metabolites identified using high performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HPLC-QqTOF-MS). Transcriptomic, metabolomic, and free radical analyses were performed to explore the functional groups and detailed molecular mechanisms of SDM and SDZ degradation. A total of 27 UniGene clusters showed significant differences between luffa fiber and luffa fiber-free systems, which were significantly correlated to cellulose catabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, and oxidoreductase activity. Carbohydrate-active enzymes and oxidoreductases appear to play particularly important roles in SDM and SDZ degradation. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy revealed the generation and evolution of OH and R during the biodegradation of SDM and SDZ, suggesting that beyond enzymatic degradation, SDM and SDZ were also transformed through a free radical pathway. Luffa fiber also acts as a co-substrate to improve the activity of enzymes for the degradation of SDM and SDZ. This research provides a potential strategy for removing SDM and SDZ from agricultural and industrial wastewater using fungal-luffa fiber systems.Calcium-based materials are considered to be promising adsorbents for phosphate removal in the water environment due to their environmental friendliness and low price. However, improving the efficiency and rate of P adsorption of calcium-based materials still needs further exploration. In this study, a high-efficiency and eco-friendly Ca/Fe composite was rationally designed and fabricated by a co-precipitated method. Batch adsorption experiments showed that Ca/Fe composites with a Ca Fe molar ratio of 3 1 exhibited a remarkable phosphate sorption capacity of 161.4 mg P/g. Furthermore, the phosphate adsorption capacity of Ca/Fe-3/1 composite was maintained relatively high at pH 3-11 due to the ligand exchange, electrostatic and chemical precipitation. In addition, the experiment performed to determine the effect of coexisting ions shows that only carbonate ions slightly inhibit the phosphate adsorption effect of the Ca/Fe-3/1 composite. The newly prepared Ca/Fe composites have a fast phosphate removal efficiency.
