Transient receptor potential vanilloid subfamily member 1 (TRPV1) is a nonselective cation channel, that is mainly distributed in sensory nerve endings and can release a variety of neurotransmitters after activation. Early studies showed that it mainly conducts pain sensation, but research has demonstrated that it also plays an important role in cardiovascular diseases. Notably, in atherosclerosis, the activation of TRPV1 can regulate lipid metabolism, reduce foam cell formation, protect endothelial cells, inhibit smooth muscle cell proliferation and inhibit inflammation and oxidation. In this review, the role of the TRPV1 channel in atherosclerosis was discussed to provide new ideas for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerotic diseases.BACKGROUND Studies conducted in coronary intensive care units (CICUs) have demonstrated that tachyarrhythmias are associated with increased mortality after acute coronary syndromes (ACSs). However, the data for tachyarrhythmias occurred in CICUs due to a variety of cardiovascular disorders are limited. METHODS We conducted a single-center prospective observational study, which included consecutive CICU patients (January 1, 2014 to May 31, 2018). RESULTS A total of 943 patients (age 66.37 ±15.4 years; 673 males [71.4%]) were included. Patients with tachyarrhythmias had higher in-CICU mortality (8.0% vs 4.1%, P = .029, odds ratio [OR] 2.04, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08-3.86) and higher 6-month all-cause mortality (12.8% vs 6.1%, P = .002, OR 2.27, 95% CI 1.35-3.83) than those who did not develop tachyarrhythmias. Ventricular arrhythmias was significantly associated with higher all-cause mortality than no tachyarrhythmia (15.4% vs 6.1%; P = .001) or SVTs (15.4% vs 7.0%; P = .001). The mean duration of hospitalization for the patients with tachyarrhythmias was 3.89 ± 4.90 days, while for the patients without was 2.79 ± 3.31 days (P less then .001). Patients without ACS had higher short- and long-term mortality compared to patients with ACS (9.2% vs 2.9%, P less then .001 and 12.9% vs 4.9%, P less then .001). CONCLUSIONS Tachyarrhythmias were associated with prolonged CICU hospitalization, while non-ACS cardiovascular disorders and the occurrence of VAs were associated with increased short- and long-term mortality.Data from a small randomized control trial of teachers' use of Data-Based Instruction (DBI) for early writing were analyzed to determine the influence of teacher knowledge, skills, and treatment fidelity on student Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) slope. Participants included 11 elementary grade teachers who delivered intensive intervention in early writing and their students (n = 31), all identified as either at risk for or with disabilities that affect their writing. Teachers received professional development and ongoing coaching to support the implementation of DBI for improving their students' early writing skills. Results from a multiple regression analysis suggest that teacher knowledge and skills in DBI was strongly related to student CBM slope in early writing (p less then .01) and a small but significant relation between fidelity of writing instruction and student CBM slope (p less then .01). Implications for instructional coaching and improving student writing progress are discussed.Studies reported that Serenoa repens was effective in relieving lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). This article carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare Serenoa repens with tamsulosin in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) after at least 6-month treatment cycle. Four studies involving 1,080 patients (543 in the Serenoa repens group and 537 in the tamsulosin group) were included in the meta-analysis. The results were as follows compared with tamsulosin, Serenoa repens had a same effect in treating BPH in terms of International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) (mean difference [MD] 0.63, 95% confidence interval [CI] [-0.33, 1.59], p = 0.20), quality of life (QoL) (MD 1.51, 95% CI [-1.51, 4.52], p = 0.33), maximum flow rate (Qmax) (MD 0.27, 95% CI [-0.15, 0.68], p = 0.21), postvoid residual volume (PVR) (MD -4.23, 95% CI [-22.97, 14.44], p = 0.65), prostate-specific antigen (PSA) (MD 0.46, 95% CI [-0.06, 0.97], p = 0.08) with the exception of prostate volume (PV) (MD -0.29, 95% CI [-0.41, -0.17], p less then 0.00001). For side effects, Serenoa repens was well tolerated compared with tamsulosin especially in ejaculation disorders (odds ratio [OR] = 12.56, 95% CI [3.83, 41.18], p less then 0.0001) and decreased libido (OR = 5.40; 95% CI [1.17, 24.87]; p = 0.03). This study indicated that Serenoa repens had the same effect in treating BPH compared with tamsulosin in terms of IPSS, QoL, and PVR after at least 6-month treatment cycle, however, the latter had a greater improvement in PV compared with the former. And Serenoa repens did not increase the risk of adverse events especially with respect to ejaculation disorders and libido decrease.The more than 20 million U.S. veterans have a history of physical activity engagement but face increasing disability as they age. Falls are common among older adults, but there is little evidence on veterans' fall risk. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using 48,643 observations from 14,831 older (≥65 years) Americans from the 2006-2014 waves of the Health and Retirement Study. Veterans reported more noninjurious falls (26.6% vs. 24.0%, p less then .002), but fewer fall-related injuries (8.9% vs. 12.3%, p less then .001) than nonveterans. In adjusted analyses, for each 5-year increase in age, the odds of a noninjurious fall were greater for veterans (odds ratio [OR] = 1.05, 95% confidence interval [CI] = [1.01, 1.10]) and, among those with regular physical activity, the odds were lower for veterans compared with nonveterans (OR = 0.89; 95% CI = [0.81, 0.99]). For veterans, physical activity engagement may prove a particularly effective mechanism for reducing the aging-related risks associated with falls and fall injuries.
