Since this monophyletic event, mitochondria have evolved considerably, and unique traits have been independently acquired in the different eukaryotic kingdoms. Mitochondrial genome expression and RNA metabolism have diverged greatly. Here, Cyanophora paradoxa, a freshwater alga considered as a living fossil among photosynthetic organisms, represents an exciting model for studying the evolution of mitochondrial gene expression. As expected, fully mature tRNAs are released from primary transcripts to function in mitochondrial translation. We also show that these tRNAs take part in an mRNA processing punctuation mechanism in a non-conventional manner, leading to mRNA-tRNA hybrids with a CCA triplet at their 3'-extremities. In this case, tRNAs are probably used as stabilizing structures impeding the degradation of mRNA by exonucleases. From our data we propose that the present-day tRNA-like elements (t-elements) found at the 3'-terminals of mitochondrial mRNAs in land plants originate from true tRNAs like those observed in the mitochondria of this basal photosynthetic glaucophyte. The association between childhood maltreatment (CM) and clinical response to mood stabilizers has been scarcely investigated in bipolar disorder (BD). Therefore, we assessed whether CM affects the response to lithium or anticonvulsant treatments in BD patients. A retrospective assessment of clinical response to mood stabilizers was conducted in 97 euthymic patients with BD by means of the Alda scale. History of CM was investigated through the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Thirty-seven patients (24 with a history of CM and 13 without CM) were on stable lithium treatment while sixty (35 with a history of CM and 25 without CM) were on stable anticonvulsant treatment. Clinical response to drug treatment did not differ between BD with CM and those without CM in the whole sample as well as in the anticonvulsant-treated subgroup. In the lithium-treated subgroup, a significant negative correlation emerged between childhood physical abuse and clinical response and patients with CM showed a significantly reduced Alda score. In BD patients, CM did not influence the clinical response to anticonvulsant mood stabilizers whereas it was associated with a poorer response to lithium with childhood physical abuse playing a major role in this effect. Two unrelated cases presented with hypoglycaemia due to isolated ACTH deficiency in the neonatal period. POMC deficiency was suspected at age 2 years (c.133-2A>C) and at age 9 months (c.64del) due to infantile hyperphagic obesity. Neither patient had a convincing red hair phenotype at the time of diagnostic suspicion, illustrating the importance of suspecting POMC deficiency in isolated ACTH deficiency. Both patients have normal psychomotor development, whereas the only other reported case of c.64del had significant delay. This suggests, if ACTH deficiency is treated early in the neonatal period, that psychomotor retardation is not a part of the phenotype. We review 24 reported cases of POMC deficiency published to date. Moreover, the phase of alpha oscillations prior to stimulus onset appears to be critical for the detection of visual stimuli. This is explained by a shift in cortical excitability over the course of each alpha cycle. However, prior studies often used short presentation times of visual stimuli at the perceptual threshold. Here, we use longer presentation times to elucidate whether the same mechanisms hold for the perception of salient but challenging visual stimuli presented for up to 1,500 ms. To this end, we presented participants with hard to distinguish but salient upright or tilted Gaussian gratings in a two-alternative forced choice task, while recording occipital electroencephalographic activity. Previous reports link alpha power to stimulus detection hit rates, and we found that low prestimulus power at the individual alpha frequency relates to higher perceptual accuracy.
