These results suggest that the VDAC1-based R-Tf-D-LP4 peptide has potential as a treatment for diabetes.In this work, Au nanoparticles, supported in Al2O3 nanowires (ANW) modified with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane were synthetized, for their use as catalysts in the hydrogenation reaction of 4-(2-fluoro-4-nitrophenyl)-morpholine and 4-(4-nitrophenyl)morpholin-3-one. ANW was obtained by hydrothermal techniques and the metal was incorporated by the reduction of the precursor with NaBH4 posterior to superficial modification. The catalysts were prepared at different metal loadings and were characterized by different techniques. The characterization revealed structured materials in the form of nanowires and a successful superficial modification. All catalysts show that Au is in a reduced state and the shape of the nanoparticles is spherical, with high metal dispersion and size distributions from 3.7 to 4.6 nm. The different systems supported in modified-ANW were active and selective in the hydrogenation reaction of both substrates, finding for all catalytic systems a selectivity of almost 100% to the aromatic amine. Fermentation is a viable processing technique to transform whole grains in edible foods since it is an affordable, less complicated technique, which not only transforms whole grains but also increases nutrient bioavailability and positively alters the levels of health-promoting components (particularly antioxidants) in derived whole grain products. This review addresses the impact of fermentation on phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities with most available studies indicating an increase in these health beneficial constituents. The body mass index (BMI) is a simple and reliable index based on weight and height that is commonly used to identify and classify adults as underweight, normal, overweight (pre-obesity), or obese. In this paper, we propose a hybrid deep neural network for predicting the BMI of smartphone users, based only on the characteristics of body movement captured by the smartphone's built-in motion sensors without any other sensitive data. The proposed deep learning model consists of four major modules a transformation module for data preprocessing, a convolution module for extracting spatial features, a long short-term memory (LSTM) module for exploring temporal dependency, and a fully connected module for regression. We define motion entropy (MEn), which is a measure of the regularity and complexity of the motion sensor, and propose a novel MEn-based filtering strategy to select parts of sensor data that met certain thresholds for training the model. We evaluate this model using two public datasets in comparison with baseline conventional feature-based methods using leave-one-subject-out (LOSO) cross-validation. Experimental results show that the proposed model with the MEn-based filtering strategy outperforms the baseline approaches significantly. The results also show that jogging may be a more suitable activity of daily living (ADL) for BMI prediction than walking and walking upstairs. We believe that the conclusions of this study will help to develop a long-term remote health monitoring system.The 25-Hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH)D) serum concentration depends on vitamin D intake, endogenous vitamin D production and genetic factors. The latter have been demonstrated in large genome-wide association studies indicating that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes related to the vitamin D metabolism are as important for serum 25(OH)D levels as the influence of season. The mechanism on how these SNPs influence serum 25(OH)D levels are still unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the genetic effects of ten selected SNPs related to vitamin D metabolism on 25-hydroxyvitamin D increase (∆25(OH)D) after vitamin D supplementation in three randomized controlled trials. Genotypes of SNPs related to vitamin D metabolism were determined in 411 participants with 25(OH)D concentrations less then 75 nmol/l receiving 20,000 IU cholecalciferol per week for 8 or 12 weeks after study inclusion. For the vitamin D receptor (VDR) rs10783219 polymorphism, the minor A-allele was associated with lower ∆25(OH)D values in the entire study population (p = 0.022), which was not consistent in all three cohorts when analysed separately. VDR rs10783219 might therefore be a genetic modulator of increasing 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations. Considering the wide-spread use of vitamin D supplementation, future large and well-designed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) should investigate the clinical impact of this polymorphism.
