Factor XII (FXII) deficiency presents as a prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) but is not associated with clinically significant bleeding. Activated clotting time (ACT) is used routinely to monitor anticoagulation with unfractionated heparin in patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The coagulation activator reagents in most ACT tests are dependent on adequate FXII concentrations to initiate contact factor coagulation pathways. We report the case of a 14.7 kg girl undergoing CPB with a pre-admission FXII concentration of 200 seconds. The child was transfused with fresh-frozen plasma to replenish FXII, allowing safe ACT monitoring of heparin anticoagulation throughout CPB.There are no effective treatments for stroke. The activation of endogenous protective mechanisms is a promising therapeutic approach, which evokes the intrinsic ability of the brain to protect itself. Accumulated evidence strongly suggests that electroacupuncture (EA) pretreatment induces rapid tolerance to cerebral ischemia. With regard to mechanisms underlying ischemic tolerance induced by EA, many molecules and signaling pathways are involved, such as the endocannabinoid system, although the exact mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. In the current study, we employed mutant mice, neuropharmacology, microdialysis, and virus transfection techniques in a middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model to explore the cell-specific and brain region-specific mechanisms of EA-induced neuroprotection. EA pretreatment resulted in increased ambient endocannabinoid (eCB) levels and subsequent activation of ischemic penumbral astroglial cannabinoid type 1 receptors (CB1R) which led to moderate upregulation of extracellular glutamate that protected neurons from cerebral ischemic injury. These findings provide a novel cellular mechanism of EA and a potential therapeutic target for ischemic stroke. The present study was aimed to evaluate the chemopreventive potential of galangin against benzo(a)pyrene (BaP)-induced stomach carcinogenesis in Swiss albino mice. Stomach cancer was induced in experimental mice using BaP oral administration. The mice were treated with galangin (10 mg/kg b.wt.) before and during BaP administration. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/alantolactone.html Oral administration of galangin at a dose of 10 mg/kg b.wt. significantly (p less then 0.05) prevented the tumor incidence, tumor volume in the experimental animals. Further, galangin pretreatment prevents BaP-induced lipid peroxidation and restores BaP-mediated loss of cellular antioxidants status. It has also been found that galangin prevents BaP-induced activation of phase I detoxification enzymes. Furthermore, galangin pretreatment prevented the BaP-induced overexpression of cytochrome P450s isoform genes (CYP1A1, CYP1B1), aryl hydrocarbon receptor system (AhR, ARNT), transcriptional activators (CBP/p300, NF-kB), tumor growth factors, proto-oncogenes, invasion markers (TGFB, SRC-1, MYC, iNOS, MMP2, MMP9) and Phase II metabolic isoenzyme genes (GST) in the stomach tissue homogenate when compared to the control groups. The western blot results confirm that galangin (10 mg/kg. b.wt.) treatment significantly prevented the BaP-mediated expression of ArR, ARNT, and CYP1A1 proteins in the mouse stomach tissue. Therefore, the present results confirm that galangin prevents BaP-induced stomach carcinogenesis probably through modulating ArR and ARNT expression in the experimental mice. France has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Anxiety, depression, burn out and the high proportion of post-traumatic stress disorder proved to be the most expected troubles caused by this pandemic and the confinement. Medico-psychological emergency units (CUMP) have been solicited at the very early stage of the pandemic because CUMP units are very well known by the French government and systematically associated to emergency plans. In this article we describe the process which has been developed to cope with the psychological needs in the general population. At a first level, platforms of volunteers specialised into listening were available. Then those platforms could directly mobilise the CUMP in case of psychiatric disorders. It ran over the whole first wave and it has been reactivated because of the second confinement in France. During the first wave, approximately 1% of all the calls made on the national Covid number required to be redirected to the listening platforms. Of this group, 4% were related to reactive pathology or a psychiatric decompensating that required adapted and specialised care. The high rates of psychological distress detected in the general population in recent scientific literature seem discrepant with our findings of relatively low reorientation towards the CUMP. Nevertheless, our study highlights that the response of the CUMP network in France during the first wave was supportive. The second wave displays its adaptability to the public health policies. In this article, I have reconstructed their experiences and work situations breastfeeding other women's infants in colonial Australia through examining available sources concerning their employment situations and the fate of their infants when they were boarded out, as they commonly were. The employment of wet-nurses by royal households or prominent families has long been the topic of historical accounts, whereas the situation of the more numerous wet-nurses further down the social spectrum has received disproportionately little examination. In this article, I do not discuss informal, altruistic wet nursing by family or neighbors but, rather, the situation of those women for whom it was an occupation, by its very nature short term. Primary material sighted for this study included a considerable number of advertisements for positions placed by employers, their intermediaries (e.g., family physicians) and wet-nurses themselves, and newspaper reports when the wet-nurse's children came to the attention of the courts.
