The variables studied were serum glucose, insulin, insulin resistance evaluated by the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), C-reactive protein, and albumin in the pre- and postoperative periods. The statistical analysis was performed with SPSS 20.0. Results There was a statistically significant difference in the coefficient of variation for the HOMA-IR index in the control group (17.27%; P less then 0.01) compared with the juice group (8.46%; P less then 0.05), which remained stable from the pre- to the postoperative period. Conclusions Preoperative fasting abbreviation with liquid containing carbohydrate and protein before gynecologic surgeries may provide metabolic stability with lower variation in insulin resistance than inert solution. Objectives In recent years, home enteral nutrition (HEN) has been adopted as a feasible and safe form of nutrition for patients undergoing esophagectomy. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of 4 wk of HEN with standard enteral nutrition (SEN) on immune function, nutritional status, and survival in patients undergoing esophagectomy. Methods A parallel-group, randomized, single-blind, clinical trial was conducted between April 1 and August 1, 2017. Eighty patients were enrolled in the study and 62 were eligible for analysis. An enteral feeding pump was used to infuse enteral nutrition via jejunostomy tube postoperatively. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Bortezomib.html Patients in HEN group were instructed to independently administer jejunostomy feeds at home. Immune parameters and nutritional indicators were measured at preoperative day 7 and at postoperative day 30. Results There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between the two groups. The levels of immunoglobulin (Ig)A and IgG, which can reflect a patient's immune function, significantly increased in the HEN group compared with those in the SEN group (P = 0.042 and P = 0.003, respectively). Comparing the two groups, 2-y progression-free survival and overall survival had no significant differences in survival curves (P = 0.36 and P = 0.29, respectively). Conclusion Four weeks of HEN is a safe and feasible nutritional strategy to improve immune function and nutritional status after esophagectomy. Although there was no significant difference in survival between the two groups, HEN could still be more effective and beneficial than SEN to patients with defective nutritional and immune status. The commonly used herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) has an as yet undetermined protective role in mitigating salinity-induced damage in crop plants. The aim of this study was to explore the possible roles of antioxidant defense and methylglyoxal (MG) detoxification systems in enhancing salt tolerance in wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Norin 61) seedlings following pretreatment with 2,4-D. Wheat seedlings were grown hydroponically, pretreated with 10 μM 2,4-D for 48 h, and then exposed to salt stress (150 and 250 mM NaCl) for the next five days. The protective effect of 2,4-D was associated with increased antioxidant enzyme activity and ascorbate and glutathione content, and with decreased malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide content and reduced electrolytic leakage. Application of 2,4-D increased glyoxalase enzyme activity, resulting in greater MG detoxification. Seedlings pretreated with 2,4-D showed improved growth, biomass, and leaf water content due to reductions in Na+ accumulation and increases in K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ uptake. Overall, these results highlight the potential use of this common herbicide as a phytoprotectant against salinity stress. This paper presents a new deep regression model, which we call DeepDistance, for cell detection in images acquired with inverted microscopy. This model considers cell detection as a task of finding most probable locations that suggest cell centers in an image. It represents this main task with a regression task of learning an inner distance metric. However, different than the previously reported regression based methods, the DeepDistance model proposes to approach its learning as a multi-task regression problem where multiple tasks are learned by using shared feature representations. To this end, it defines a secondary metric, normalized outer distance, to represent a different aspect of the problem and proposes to define its learning as complementary to the main cell detection task. In order to learn these two complementary tasks more effectively, the DeepDistance model designs a fully convolutional network (FCN) with a shared encoder path and end-to-end trains this FCN to concurrently learn the tasks in parallel. For further performance improvement on the main task, this paper also presents an extended version of the DeepDistance model that includes an auxiliary classification task and learns it in parallel to the two regression tasks by also sharing feature representations with them. DeepDistance uses the inner distances estimated by these FCNs in a detection algorithm to locate individual cells in a given image. In addition to this detection algorithm, this paper also suggests a cell segmentation algorithm that employs the estimated maps to find cell boundaries. Our experiments on three different human cell lines reveal that the proposed multi-task learning models, the DeepDistance model and its extended version, successfully identify the locations of cell as well as delineate their boundaries, even for the cell line that was not used in training, and improve the results of its counterparts. Objectives This study aims to explore the probability of developing posttraumatic epilepsy (PTE) in the following 8 years after traumatic brain injury (TBI), the risk factors associated with PTE and its cumulative prevalence. Methods This is a retrospective follow-up study of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) discharged from the West China Hospital between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2017, Chengdu Shang Jin Nan Fu Hospital and Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital from January 1, 2013 to March 1, 2015. We used forward stepwise method to build the final multivariate cox proportional hazard regression model to obtain estimates of hazard ratio (HR) of PTE and 95% confidence intervals (CI). We also conducted Kaplan-Meier survival analysis to investigate the cumulative prevalence of PTE. Results The cumulative incidence of PTE rose from 6.2% in one year to 10.6% in eight years. There were more male patients in PTE group and generally older. Besides, patients with PTE tended to have abnormal CT scan results.
